Pieng Vai village is located about 30km from the center of My Ly commune, with difficult traffic. There are 73 households/368 people of Mong ethnic group residing there, and life is still difficult. Many women in the village cannot read or write, so they cannot conduct personal transactions.

Based on the actual situation, My Ly Border Guard Station coordinated with local authorities and My Ly 1 Primary Boarding School to open classes to eradicate illiteracy and re-illiteracy for the people.

Lieutenant Colonel Cu Ba Po, Captain of the Mass Mobilization Team of My Ly Border Guard Station, mobilized people to participate in literacy classes.

Representatives of local authorities, education sector, and My Ly Border Guard Station gave gifts and encouraged people to learn to read and write.

Teacher Luong Thi Ngan teaches the people to read and write.

The opening ceremony was held at Pieng Vai Primary School on May 9. The class had 10 students, who were women in the village. The class was held on weekday evenings and had 6 teachers, including 5 teachers from the school and 1 officer from the border guard station.

According to Major Phan Duc Tam, Political Commissar of My Ly Border Guard Station: “We will maintain the class for about 4 months with the goal of helping people to be able to read and write fluently in Mandarin and do basic calculations. The task of eliminating illiteracy for the people is facing many difficulties due to the long and dangerous roads, teachers have to take turns staying in the area to teach.”
