According to The Sun , the Red Devils' board of directors has begun preparing a backup plan in case they have to make a decision to sack Amorim before the end of the season. The prominent name being considered is Darren Fletcher - former MU midfielder and currently head coach of the U18 team.
Fletcher was only appointed at the end of June, but has quickly made his mark with his flexible coaching style and positive results with the youth team. This makes him a leading candidate to take the interim position if Amorim leaves the hot seat mid-season.
By the summer of 2026, MU will have more options on the coaching bench, especially after the 2026 World Cup ends.

Amorim took over at MU from the middle of the 2024/25 season after Erik ten Hag was fired. Expectations for the Portuguese strategist were very high, especially when the club spent more than 200 million pounds to upgrade the squad. However, what has happened so far has been disappointing.
MU are currently languishing in 14th place in the rankings, having won only 34 points after 33 matches in the Premier League under Amorim.
Experts have criticized the 39-year-old coach for being too rigid in his playing style and lacking flexibility to adapt to the current situation. If he is fired before November, MU will have to pay him a contract compensation of 12 million pounds.
