Jerry Mabena, CEO of Motsamayi Tourism Group, which owns the hotel, said the railway line that runs over the suspension bridge is called Selati. In the 1920s, a steam train used to run over the railway line, mainly for tourists visiting Kruger National Park. In 1970, a new railway line was built on the edge of the Kruger Game Reserve, which caused the Selati line to cease operations. In 2016, the idea of turning the steam train over the suspension bridge into a resort emerged, with the aim of restoring the bridge to its former glory.
“We had the opportunity to buy old, broken-down train cars from Transnet, the company that runs rail logistics services in South Africa, and we immediately started working on the idea,” says Jerry Mabena. Photo: tobymurphy_photography
