At the discussion, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province informed that Phu Quoc International Airport is currently at level 4E, with 1 runway capable of receiving large aircraft such as A350, B787 and 4 million passengers and 5,000 tons of cargo/year.
The apron and runway alone have 9 aircraft parking positions, including 1 position for large aircraft B777 or equivalent.
According to the planning for the 2021-2030 period, Phu Quoc airport will be upgraded according to the standard code of the International Civil Aviation Organization - ICAO with a capacity of about 10 million passengers and 25,000 tons of cargo/year; capable of receiving B747, B787, A350 and equivalent aircraft.
By 2050, Phu Quoc airport will increase its capacity to about 18 million passengers and 50,000 tons of cargo/year; receiving B747, B787, A350 and equivalent aircraft.

Meanwhile, Rach Gia Airport (Rach Gia City) was built in 1960 and was renovated and upgraded twice by the Southern Airports Group in 1997 and 2006, and repaired and reinforced with a soft-cover structure in 2014. However, the exploitation situation of Rach Gia Airport has gradually decreased every year. Specifically, in 2022, it transported over 51,200 passengers, in 2023 it decreased to more than 33,300 passengers, and in 2024 it decreased to more than 9,500 passengers.
Up to now, this airport is still in use, including a runway measuring 1,500m x 30m; a connecting taxiway measuring 49.28m x 15m; and an aircraft parking lot measuring 165.7m x 87.6m.
Perspective of Phu Quoc airport in the future
According to the master plan for the development of the national airport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 648 dated June 7, 2023, Rach Gia Airport is planned to be a domestic port reaching level 4C by 2050 and a level II military airport; the port capacity by 2030 will reach 0.5 million passengers/year and by 2050 will reach 1 million passengers/year.
Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee requested ACV to study and invest in upgrading Rach Gia Airport according to the plan. Including investing in runways to receive aircraft such as Airbus 321. At the same time, attracting many airlines to operate; investing in a terminal that can accommodate 1 million passengers, completed before 2027 to serve the APEC 2027 Conference.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee, in the coming time, with the province's tourism development momentum, and the merger of An Giang province with Kien Giang province, and the new provincial headquarters in Kien Giang, the demand for flights will increase sharply. The province is oriented to develop Rach Gia airport into a multi-functional aviation area, playing a strategic role in connecting with the "pearl island" Phu Quoc and developing the Mekong Delta region.
Regarding the investment in expanding Phu Quoc International Airport, aiming to serve the APEC 2027 Conference, the Government has assigned the People's Committee of Kien Giang province to select domestic investors and organize the implementation of the project to ensure it is suitable for the nature of a shared civil-military airport.

According to Mr. Vu The Phiet, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ACV, up to now, the unit has completed the review of aviation infrastructure assets; completed the measurement and determination of the boundary of land assets of enterprises and the State; is responsible for maintaining and operating the infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted and absolute safety in the exploitation and management of Phu Quoc International Airport during the project expansion process.
