The heroic history of Military Region 3 in the resistance war against French colonialism

During the resistance war against French colonialism (1945-1954), the enemy determined that the Northern Delta was the "key" of Southeast Asia, the "key" to the Indochina battlefield, so they concentrated a large force here (sometimes up to 50% of the force in Indochina), including elite, combat-ready units, equipped with the most modern equipment and built a system of solid posts, along with a very tightly organized puppet army and puppet government system, to control this entire strategic area.

Therefore, during the resistance war against French colonialism, Inter-zone 3 (now Military Zone 3) was the enemy's rear area, a key and hot battlefield, where fierce confrontations and fierce struggles took place between us and the enemy.

After President Ho Chi Minh's call for national resistance (December 1946) and thoroughly grasping and implementing the Party Central Committee's direction, the Inter-zone stepped up the building of armed forces as the core to conduct people's war and guerrilla warfare. The movement to join the militia and guerrillas took place in all localities. Along with that, the Inter-zone stepped up the building of a broad political base of the masses and built a people's war posture throughout the area. The organizations "Youth for National Salvation", "Women for National Salvation", "Farmers for National Salvation", "Buddhists for National Salvation", "Catholics for National Salvation", etc. were born and operated very effectively.

Under the leadership of the Party, directly by the Inter-Zone Committee, the resistance war of the army and people in the area was carried out with the strength of the combined forces, applying diverse and flexible forms of struggle and fighting methods, carrying out continuous warfare, closely combining political and economic struggles with armed struggles and enemy propaganda, taking armed struggles as the main thing; making an important contribution with the whole country to defeat the invading French colonialists.

The heroic history, resounding victories and great sacrifices of the army and people of Military Region 3 in the resistance war against the French colonialists have contributed to creating the immortal epic of the Vietnamese people; illuminating revolutionary heroism, solidarity, patriotism, will and aspiration for independence and freedom.

The Party led Military Region 3 to build the rear in the resistance war against the US to save the country.

Years have passed, but the glorious and great victory of the resistance war against the US to save the country will forever be the pride of all Vietnamese people. In that common victory of the nation, there was a great contribution from the army and people of Military Region 3.

With the aim of destroying the potential of the North and preventing the North from supporting the South, the US imperialists concentrated their air and naval forces to conduct two large-scale destructive wars against the North (1965-1968 and 1972). In that situation, at the 11th Central Conference (March 1965) and the 12th (December 1965), the Party decided to transfer all activities of the North, including Military Region 3, from peacetime to wartime, both fighting and producing. This decision not only helped Military Region 3 have enough strength to fight back and defeat the US's destructive war, but also ensured the continued construction of socialism and played a major rear role.

Based on the foundation of the new social regime, the Party has had many policies and measures to promote the role of the rear of Military Region 3 to the highest level, effectively supporting human resources and resources to the front line. With the spirit of "All for the beloved South", "All for the front line, all to defeat the American invaders", "not a pound of rice is missing, not a soldier is missing", Military Region 3 strongly launched the movement: "The entire Military Region turns to the front line", "The entire Military Region goes to battle" ... Thereby, mobilizing the army and people, making every effort to effectively support human resources and resources to the front line.

In terms of manpower, in addition to the main force fighting on the spot and protecting the rear, Military Region 3 has built a main force to supplement the battlefields, including 4 complete divisions, 5 division frames, 29 regiments, 1,026 battalions, 171 companies, many military units... In terms of material resources, the army and people of Military Region 3, together with the army and people of the Northern provinces, brought to the South millions of tons of weapons, ammunition, military equipment, medicine and medical instruments, food, provisions... through strategic routes. In particular, in more than 2 years of preparation for the Spring General Offensive and Uprising in 1975, the entire Route 559 transported and handed over to the battlefields 413,450 tons of weapons and goods of all kinds...; contributing to the victory of the resistance war against the US to save the country.

In the heroic flow of history of the nation, Uncle Ho's soldiers have written glorious pages of history, protecting the independence and freedom of the Fatherland. When returning to civilian life, they constantly promote the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers, continuing to devote their strength and intelligence to building their homeland. The Hai Phong City Veterans Association is a living proof of that spirit.

Generations of city veterans have worked with their comrades to gradually overcome the fierce challenges of war, writing heroic history: From the Cat Bi and Tien Lang anti-aircraft artillery positions to the historic K15 wharf on Do Son - the starting point of the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail at sea. Those were not only years of hardship but also the sacred camaraderie and comradeship and the noble sacrifice of many fallen comrades. Therefore, the activities of paying tribute to and remembering heroic martyrs and taking care of gratitude are always given top priority by the Hai Phong City Veterans Association.

With the motto "Heavy gratitude, caring to repay gratitude", the Association is not only a warm common home but also a leading flag in social movements, contributing to embellishing the tradition of "Drinking water, remembering its source" of the nation. In the past 5 years, the Association has donated and presented more than 5,500 gifts worth more than 2.65 billion VND, coordinated with functional agencies to present 42 wheelchairs to seriously wounded comrades; 90 bicycles to children of wounded and sick soldiers; organized for nearly 100 comrades to go to the Friendship Village for treatment...

In particular, from 2022 to 2025, the Hai Phong City Veterans Association has helped build and repair 215 houses (66 new houses, 149 houses repaired) for members in especially difficult circumstances. Responding to the emulation movement "eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses" launched by the Prime Minister, the Association has mobilized cadres, veteran members, philanthropists, and businesses to support veteran members in especially difficult circumstances to repair and build 129 houses worth more than 11.5 billion VND (86 houses repaired; 43 new houses built), and presented 10 breeding cows to members in difficult circumstances.

Those actions of the Hai Phong City Veterans Association and the people have both political and profound humanistic significance, contributing to educating patriotism and revolutionary traditions for today's and tomorrow's young generations.
