A group of Gen Z students from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) turned their event organization coursework into a project about clowning.

You come to the Vietnam Cheo Theater, meet the artists and hope for companionship. The project Phi clown bat thanh cheo was born.

Whatever is said, traditional art needs an audience to survive. The young generation who love culture and want to spread traditional culture is precious and should receive encouragement, support and companionship.

Artist TUAN CUONG

Gen Z, Alpha do traditional art

On the evening of May 7 at the Vietnam Cheo Theater, despite the heavy rain in Hanoi , the event organized by young people still attracted hundreds of attendees. The theater auditorium only had a few empty seats.

In addition to excerpts of the village chief - Dop's mother in the play Quan Am Thi Kinh , He Dep Dam - Thi Nhip - Vo Nuoc (performed by artists of the Vietnam Cheo Theater), there is also Cheo clown rap, performing new lyrics of He Moi with a green belt .

The interactive game attracted many audiences to come on stage to play the role of the village chief and Dop's mother.

In addition, a talk show about Cheo clowns with the participation of guests People's Artist Le Tuan Cuong - acting director of the Vietnam Cheo Theater, Cheo actor Van Phuong... is enough to open up and create curiosity for young people to learn more about this genre.

It was raining outside but inside the theater it was cozy, with lots of laughter and applause for the artists, for the artists who are very young but have creative and new ways to introduce the heritage of Cheo clowning to the public today.

On May 13, another group of Gen Z youth will also organize the Da Lan Canh event. This event combines Quan Ho singing performances with a talk show decoding the ancient Bac Ninh Quan Ho singing style.

Through this, young people want to create inspiration with the art form recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

Established in 2016, the Vietnam Intangible Cultural Heritage Promotion Center (VICH) initially accompanied young people in many different roles. The center's key members are all Gen Z young people.

Currently, VICH is organizing the event Heritage in the heart of the city , bringing Xam singing back to Hanoi streets. 60 minutes of Xam playing - Xam telling - Xam singing, the audience can enjoy and experience the unique musical instruments and the coin-based form of Xam.

Previously, VICH organized many other programs such as Canh quan ho in early 2023, listening to stories of the times in Xam mats in the Tet show event - Xam Tonkin opening spring 2024...

Recently, VICH also participated in May show I & II held in Ninh Binh with the theme Weaving a little nostalgia , inspired by traditional craft villages in Ninh Binh...

MAI HUONG

New journey of experience

Ms. Mai Huong - a member of the organizing committee of the event Phi clown bat thanh cheo - said that traditional art is becoming more and more widely known by young people.

Mai Huong cited singer Hoa Minzy with MV Thi Mau , Hoang Dung with Ve nghe me lullaby ...

Ms. Huong also mentioned some groups of young people who are very active in projects and clubs about traditional arts such as Cheo 48h, Folklore...

People's Artist Le Tuan Cuong told Tuoi Tre "it's been a long time since I've been as happy as I am today". The presence of many young audiences on the evening of May 7 at the Vietnam Cheo Theater brought a youthful, vibrant atmosphere different from usual.

Mr. Cuong highly appreciated the way young people did it in the event Phi clown bat thanh cheo as well as many other events related to traditional arts organized by young people recently.

According to him, traditional art also moves and changes to suit the trends of the times.

The young generation conveys culture, approaches and absorbs the cultural quintessence of humanity and introduces the traditional art of the nation to the world through the creativity of your generation. That is a commendable effort.

However, young people working in traditional culture also face many difficulties. Ms. Dinh Thao - Deputy Director of VICH - listed some obstacles, such as source of materials; artisans and artists in the field of traditional culture... have been lost.

Ms. Dinh Thao shared that in order to take long, big steps, young people must take small steps; whether big or small, they must take care of it and put their heart into it.

For each event, young people must analyze the audience's demographic, age, profession, and desires, then build a suitable experience itinerary.
