Faced with pressure from climate change, fierce market competition, and increasingly stringent requirements for agricultural product quality, the application of science and technology has become an inevitable trend. The province has identified the development of science and technology as a breakthrough to enhance production value, improve agricultural product quality, and increase people's income. Based on this orientation, the province focuses its resources on investing in advanced production models, linking research with practical field applications.
Many high-yielding crop and livestock varieties, well-adapted to the local climate and soil, have been introduced into mass production. After testing, new varieties in the fields of crop cultivation, aquaculture, and forestry have demonstrated superior disease resistance, tolerance to harsh weather conditions, and outstanding economic efficiency. Ecological and organic farming models have also been comprehensively implemented. Synchronized solutions, from using native microorganisms to improve degraded soil and processing by-products into fertilizers to expanding water-saving irrigation systems, contribute to environmental protection.
The development of high-tech livestock farming contributes to improving productivity, enhancing product value and quality, and making a positive contribution to the local economic restructuring process. The province has recognized five high-tech agricultural zones: Trung Son, Kien Giang; Trung An, Kien Giang; Minh Phu, Kien Giang; VIFABA banana; and the aquaculture zone of Nam Viet - Binh Phu Aquaculture Company Limited (Chau Phu).
High-tech farming has also seen many positive changes. Greenhouse models, drip irrigation, and humidity sensors have been implemented in communes, wards, and special economic zones. Not stopping at vegetable production, many localities are also focusing on developing raw material areas according to export standards.
However, the application of science and technology to agricultural production still faces many obstacles. In reality, the scale of application at the household level remains small and fragmented, lacking regional linkages and synchronization. Many technical advancements, despite successful research, have not yet been applied in practice due to a lack of transfer mechanisms and insufficient technical support at the grassroots level. On the other hand, the level of technological access among some farmers is still limited, making it difficult to operate machinery and equipment.
According to Vo Minh Trung, Director of the Department of Science and Technology, in order for strategic directions to truly translate into real-life production, and in accordance with the province's directives, relevant departments and agencies are gradually perfecting the ecosystem for applying science and technology in agricultural production. The focus is on building a favorable environment in terms of policies, resources, and connectivity, making it easier for farmers and businesses to access, apply, and effectively utilize technological advancements.
An Giang focuses on improving institutions and policies, prioritizing the issuance of mechanisms for commissioning research closely linked to practical production. This solution ensures that scientific projects closely follow real-world needs, creating a strong impetus for innovation at institutes, universities, and research centers. Support policies regarding credit, land, and taxes are implemented synchronously to encourage the development of high-tech agricultural models.
Planning and developing concentrated production areas is considered a crucial step. The province is focusing on investing in the synchronized development of technical infrastructure, transportation, and irrigation in major raw material areas to create optimal conditions for attracting long-term investment from businesses and promoting large-scale, standardized, and sustainable production among farmers.
Modern agriculture is not just about innovating production methods; at its core, it's about transforming the mindset of farmers. Only when science and technology are systematically accessed and applied through training can agriculture develop sustainably.
