Speaking at the event, Vice Chairwoman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thi Hoang said that this year's World Environment Day was launched by the United Nations Environment Program with the theme "Fighting plastic pollution" to call on the global community to take drastic action to deal with plastic waste.
This is the second time in three years (2023-2025) that this theme has been selected, demonstrating the global priority in controlling plastic pollution, while reaffirming the commitment to using resources efficiently, protecting biodiversity, enhancing resilience, promoting innovation and strengthening cooperation towards a circular economy and sustainable development.

In recent times, Vietnam has issued and implemented many important policies, programs and strategies to strengthen plastic waste management and reduce plastic pollution. The Provincial People's Committee has also issued and implemented many plans and projects to effectively manage plastic waste in the province.

Provincial leaders called on all levels, sectors, socio- political organizations, businesses and each citizen to unify awareness and join hands in fighting plastic waste. Specifically, it is necessary to strengthen propaganda and education to raise awareness of the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment and human health; reduce the consumption of plastic products, especially single-use plastics, increase recycling and reuse of plastics and prioritize the use of recycled products.
Supermarkets and shopping malls use environmentally friendly packaging. Businesses promote research and application of new technologies and new materials to produce products that are easily degradable and less harmful to the environment. Media agencies promote propaganda to change people's habits of using plastic bags and disposable plastic products...

At the launching ceremony, there were also activities of exchanging waste for gifts, a parade of environmental protection propaganda vehicles; provincial and local leaders, businesses, and people planting trees; and awarding prizes for the excellent environmental protection propaganda team contest held on May 30 in Dinh Quan district.

According to statistics from the United Nations, the world produces about 430 million tons of plastic each year, of which more than two-thirds are single-use products that quickly become waste, polluting the ocean and seriously affecting the ecosystem and human health. In Vietnam, an estimated 1.8 million tons of plastic waste is generated each year, but only about 27% is recycled, the majority of the rest is buried, released into the environment or burned, causing waste of resources and posing many potential ecological risks.
