(Fatherland) - With passion and enthusiasm, Meritorious Artisan Kray Suc has made many contributions to the work of preserving, maintaining and promoting the culture of the Pa Co ethnic group in Western Quang Tri .
Love for the nation from mother's Ta Lu zither
When you come to A Lieng village, Ta Rut commune, Dakrong district (Quang Tri province) and ask about the excellent artisan Kray Suc, everyone will know. Those who love the culture of ethnic minorities in Quang Tri province know the artisan Kray Suc for his contributions to the work of preserving and maintaining the traditional culture of the Pa Co ethnic group.
Meritorious artist Kray Suc was born in 1964 in a family with many siblings. His family was poor as a child, and his family's life was difficult, in line with the general hardships of ethnic minorities during the war. He was the 9th child in a family of 11 siblings, but for various reasons, only Kray Suc remained with his mother, while his father was in the army.

Before leaving for the army, his father left Kray Suc and his mother a Ta Lu instrument – a traditional musical instrument of the Pa Co people. Since then, his difficult childhood years were also nurtured and grew up with lullabies and the sound of the Ta Lu instrument filled with his mother's love.
In 1976, when he was 12 years old, the Pa Co ethnic people where Kray Suc lived held the A Rieu Ping festival for the first time since the country was completely liberated. The festival aims to express gratitude and remember the deceased, and is also an opportunity for the ethnic groups in the highlands to meet and exchange to celebrate the peace of their homeland. Seeing the village elders and villagers performing the festival rituals, enjoying the singing and music of his fellow countrymen, Kray Suc could not help but sob, remembering the Ta Lu instrument played by his mother. From then on, he sought out the village elder Kon Sen to study.
As the years passed, Kray Suc's musical instruments and singing voices were gradually tempered by his passion and love for his people's culture. In his youth, Kray Suc won many awards in competitions and was admired by many people. However, what he always kept in mind was that along with the Ta Lu musical instruments, many cultural identities of the Pa Co people were gradually being lost. Even more sadly, many people often confused the Pa Co culture with the Van Kieu or Ta Oi people. These reasons urged him to find a way to restore and preserve it.
Passing on culture to many young generations
Since 2004, Kray Suc has traveled to all the Pa Co villages in Quang Tri, even to Laos, to meet people who are knowledgeable about Pa Co culture to ask questions. After 14 years of painstakingly collecting and recording, he has a collection of more than 300 photos of the Pa Co people. These are extremely valuable documents to serve the work of restoring and preserving Pa Co culture in the future.
Also in that year, Kray Suc took these photos to exhibitions in many localities in the province. For the first time, a large-scale photo exhibition about the Pa Co ethnic group received great attention and appreciation from the public. More specifically, when people learned that he had to sell his family's only buffalo to have funds to carry out the project, many people could not help but admire him. Because at that time, for a person living in the mountains like him, this was a huge asset.

Not only collecting for preservation, Kray Suc also brought the cultural features of the Pa Co people to all the villages to pass on to everyone. At the time when musical instruments such as Ta Lu and gongs of the Pa Co people in Quang Tri were very rare, he saved up money and asked an experienced person to make 10 Ta Lu instruments. He gave these instruments to 9 villages in Ta Rut commune, and kept the remaining instrument for himself.
Having the Ta Lu, Kray Suc took the trouble to go to villages to encourage and call on people to learn. After many years of hard work, thanks to him, many people, especially the young generation, have been able to play the Ta Lu and sing some folk songs. Many folk song teaching clubs have been established, contributing to arousing the passion and responsibility of the community in joining hands to preserve the traditional culture of the nation.
Not only teaching folk songs to the Pa Co people in Dakrong district, Kray Suc also accepts invitations to teach in other localities inside and outside the province. Following him are excellent students who share the same passion and enthusiasm for ethnic culture. Up to now, hundreds of people, including many young Pa Co people, have been taught cultural values by Mr. Kray Suc and his students.

Sharing his wishes, Mr. Kray Suc said that in the coming time, he hopes that the Party and State will continue to pay more attention to the work of preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities. Especially in the work of training and teaching traditional culture to the young generation.
"Besides, I also hope that there will be many competitions, cultural and tourism events related to ethnic minorities organized so that our people have the opportunity to introduce and promote the cultural beauty of our people to domestic and international friends," said artisan Kray Suc.
With his contributions, in 2015, Mr. Kray Suc was honored to receive the title of Meritorious Artisan awarded by the President for his outstanding contributions in preserving and promoting the nation's cultural heritage, contributing to the cause of building socialism and defending the Fatherland.
In 2017, Mr. Kray Suc was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Minister and Chairman of the Ethnic Committee for his outstanding achievements in ethnic work and implementation of the ethnic policies of the Party and State.
