Part 2: Fueling the fire of gratitude

Efforts in the journey of "gratitude to ease pain" are not only through the "Repaying gratitude" policy of the Party and State, but also through countless noble gestures of the community.

From the houses of gratitude, the subsidies, to the images of veterans and war invalids overcoming difficulties, helping each other to do business , reduce poverty, and build new lives… are living proof of the spirit of “When drinking water, remember its source”, of the power of humanity, of connection, love, sharing and deep gratitude. And in each of those acts is a reminder: No one will be forgotten, no sacrifice is meaningless…

After the "silence" left by the war, heroic sons of the nation such as People's Armed Forces Hero Pham Huy Nghe, Heroic Vietnamese Mother Ho Thi Chung, or war invalid Nguyen Van Kiet, despite experiencing much pain and loss, continued to shine with their strong will and silent, meaningful contributions to society.

Although he had left the army, Hero of the People's Armed Forces Pham Huy Nghe continued to take on the role of Secretary of the Quynh Ngoc Village Party Cell, Ea Na Commune from 2006 to 2020. With nearly 100 veterans from all periods in the cell, he led the local veterans movement to become one of the local pioneers.

From helping each other develop the economy, reduce poverty to contributing working days to build roads, build houses of gratitude... the veterans here are always the leading force. "The image of Uncle Ho's soldiers, if evoked at the right time, placed in the right circumstances, will always be a great source of strength, spreading positive life values and building trust in the community...", Mr. Nghe shared as a simple but profound conclusion about the qualities of soldiers in peacetime.

As for the Vietnamese Heroic Mother Ho Thi Chung, although she is no longer healthy, her small house is still a "red address" for young people to return to, listen to true stories about a difficult war time, thereby fostering patriotism and a sense of responsibility towards the Fatherland.

For many young people, each time they visit Mother is an opportunity to approach history and thereby understand more deeply the sacred value of peace today. Phan Ho Ngoc Lai, a 12th grade student at Cu M'gar High School, emotionally expressed: "Mother's story makes me more aware of the losses that our fathers and brothers went through to protect independence. I feel that I need to live more responsibly towards my homeland and appreciate what I have."

In Lien Tri 2 neighborhood, Binh Kien ward, war invalid Nguyen Van Kiet still takes care of more than 2,000 apricot and kumquat trees every day. In addition, he actively participates in emulation movements of the Veterans Association, contributing to building a new cultural life in residential areas and neighborhoods free of drugs...

Although his body is not healthy, with his will and love for life, the disabled soldier Nguyen Van Kiet has planted spring himself. Each apricot branch and each kumquat pot in that garden not only brings income, but is also a symbol of spring, of rising from pain, loss, and hardship.

Showing gratitude to those who have contributed to the revolution is a major policy that the Party, the State and the whole society have materialized through many practical actions. In recent years, Dak Lak province has implemented many practical policies, spreading the movement of "Repaying gratitude" throughout society, contributing to improving the material and spiritual life of policy beneficiaries and martyrs' relatives.

Currently, the province is paying monthly preferential allowances to more than 18,000 meritorious people and their relatives with a total budget of nearly 54 billion VND/month. In 2024 alone, the province's "Repaying Gratitude" Fund mobilized nearly 14 billion VND, contributing to the construction and repair of 143 Gratitude houses; giving 101 savings books and providing timely support to policy families when they are sick or in difficulty.

According to Mr. Le Duc Tinh, Deputy Director of the Department of Home Affairs, currently 53/53 Vietnamese Heroic Mothers in the area are being cared for and supported for life by agencies and units. Families with revolutionary contributions all have a standard of living equal to or higher than the average income in the locality. 100% of communes and wards do a good job of taking care of people with meritorious contributions, from healthcare, housing to social security policies.

That spirit of gratitude is also continued by Dak Lak youth through a series of practical activities. Mr. Nguyen Thao Giang, Deputy Secretary of Dak Lak Provincial Youth Union, said: In recent years, Dak Lak Provincial Youth Union has implemented many activities towards policy families and people with meritorious services, demonstrating the spirit of "Repaying gratitude" and "When drinking water, remember its source".

Activities include visiting, giving gifts, supporting house repairs to show gratitude to people with revolutionary contributions in difficult circumstances; organizing "Warm and loving reunion meals" and "Meals of gratitude" programs at the homes of Vietnamese Heroic Mothers and relatives of people with revolutionary contributions; medical examination and treatment for women and mothers; sending "Gratitude to martyrs" messages; presenting reconstructed portraits of martyrs to families of martyrs' relatives; awarding scholarships to children of people with revolutionary contributions; volunteering to clean the environment; repairing and embellishing steles, memorials, memorial houses and martyr cemeteries... planting more trees, creating a green, clean and beautiful environment.

Every year, 100% of the Youth Union organizations organize a candle lighting ceremony to pay tribute and offer incense to the heroic martyrs on the evening of July 27, present more than 5,000 gifts to families with meritorious services to the revolution, present more than 2,000 study gifts to students in difficult circumstances, support the construction of at least 2 new charity houses...

With the participation of the entire political system, the support of the community and the pioneering spirit of the youth, the wounds of war are gradually being healed not only by policies, but also by gratitude and sincere feelings. And also from today's acts of kindness, we realize that gratitude is not only compensating for the past, but also a responsibility to live in the present, a continuing action, a step forward for the future.
