Hue Imperial Citadel Flag Tower has a long-standing cultural and historical value. Through the vicissitudes of history, there are many stories here that not everyone knows.
When mentioning Hue Citadel, perhaps the first image that appears in the subconscious of those who have been to the ancient capital is the red flag and five-pointed star flying on the flagpole, with solid, ancient walls at the foot. Built in the 6th year of Gia Long (1807), Hue Imperial Citadel is a relic in the Complex of Hue Monuments recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage in 1993. Located about 5km from the city center, the Flag Tower was built in the direction of the South of the Imperial City, within the scope of the Nam Chanh fortress, directly in front of the Ngo Mon gate. With an age of more than 200 years, the Flag Tower is one of the highlights of Hue tourism thanks to its impressive architecture and profound cultural values, demonstrating the history of the Nguyen Dynasty. The flagpole consists of two main parts: the flag stand and the flagpole. The flag stand has three truncated tiers stacked on top of each other. The first tier is over 5.5m high, the second tier is about 6m high, and the third tier is over 6m high. The total height of the flagpole is about 18m. Previously, the flagpole was made of wood, later it was changed to cast iron pipe. However, after a long period of war, the current flagpole was rebuilt with iron, more solid and sturdy. The red flag with yellow star flutters on top of the flagpole, showing national pride and spirit. The Flag Tower witnessed many important historical events. Notably, on August 21, 1945, for the first time, the flag of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam flew on top of the Flag Tower. On August 23, 1945, the August Revolution broke out and succeeded in Hue. In early 2023, after connecting Thuong Thanh, this place has become an interesting and novel experience for locals and tourists. Ky Dai in particular and Thuong Thanh relic in general are newly exploited tourist attractions and are free for visitors, so many tourists may not know about the wonderful space on this relic. The upcoming time is the 30th anniversary of the Complex of Hue Monuments being recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage (1993 - 2023). When coming to Hue on this occasion, visitors will experience the atmosphere of festivals as well as have the opportunity to visit the new tourist destination Ky Dai - Thuong Thanh. A great place to visit, learn about history and see the heritage of Hue. The problem of writing and drawing graffiti on the Imperial Citadel of Hue is a burning issue. People and tourists are encouraged to have the spirit and responsibility to protect heritage and prevent acts of encroachment on relics. This will contribute to building a civilized tourism environment, true to the name of Hue city - the city of tourism.
