How much do engineers at Apple and Google earn?

Technology engineers at leading corporations like Apple, Meta, Google, and Amazon often earn hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, especially AI engineers.

After a period of rapid growth, a number of leading technology companies are facing pressure to tighten spending. Many of them, such as Meta, Google, and Amazon, have laid off tens of thousands of employees in a short time, despite having hired heavily beforehand.

However, technology engineers, especially those working in AI, at Big Tech are still highly paid. This is partly due to the recent AI boom. Salary data from the aggregation platform Levels.fyi and collected by Business Insider shows that they still receive generous compensation packages.

Google

Engineers at level three – Google's lowest level for engineers – can earn between $130,000 and $280,000 annually. For senior engineers, that number can reach $300,000, or even $700,000 or more in cash and company stock.

An AI engineer at Google earns an average of $254,700. However, highly skilled individuals can earn up to $535,000 per year. One Google employee stated that he currently receives a base salary of $265,000 plus $270,000 in performance-based stock bonuses.

Google froze hiring earlier this year after laying off 12,000 people. However, the company said it continues to hire engineers in some key areas.

Microsoft

The American software company pays a senior engineer (with over 8 years of experience) up to $400,000. For a new engineer, the salary ranges from $130,000 to $250,000, plus bonuses of around $200,000 depending on performance.

Microsoft is currently leading and at the center of the AI ​​race after investing billions of dollars in OpenAI. In this area, the company still employs hundreds of engineers, despite cutting back in other areas.

Apple

Engineers who join Apple start at level three on the seniority scale. They earn around $160,000 per year, but can receive bonuses of $200,000 to $250,000 for achieving certain goals.

Meanwhile, Tier 4 and Tier 5 engineers with more years of experience can earn between $330,000 and $500,000 per year. They will receive a base salary of $200,000 plus stock options, often exceeding $100,000.

With AI, Apple pays higher salaries. A level four machine learning engineer can earn $505,000, including $235,000 in cash and $270,000 from stock and bonuses.

Meta

Meta's software engineering team starts at level three (beginner), going up to level eight (for senior and most experienced engineers). A new hire typically earns around $170,000 per year.

However, at level four, Meta engineers have more to offer. In addition to the aforementioned salary, they can also receive $80,000 in restricted stock and an annual performance bonus of $15,000.

Meanwhile, lower-level engineers can earn $500,000, especially if their expertise is related to machine learning. Those at levels 7 and 8 with years of experience can earn between $1.5 million and $2 million, but only a very small fraction reach these income levels.

Amazon

Amazon employees' income is heavily reliant on stock options. For example, engineers specializing in machine learning and AI can earn up to $300,000 annually, comprising $200,000 in cash and $120,000 in stock.

According to an Amazon employee in the Alexa virtual assistant division, new hires with no experience (often recent graduates) start at level four engineers, earning around $180,000. Those with a PhD earn between $250,000 and $300,000. Top-level engineers earn between $350,000 and $500,000.

Nvidia

Graphics chip manufacturer Nvidia is experiencing strong growth thanks to the AI ​​boom, with a market capitalization nearing $1 trillion. However, even before the AI ​​explosion, the company paid its technology engineers high salaries compared to the average, with a base salary of $200,000 per year. Meanwhile, Nvidia's software engineers specializing in AI and machine learning could earn an average of $285,000.

According to Salary.com statistics as of May 25th, the average salary for technology engineers in the US is $77,433 per year.
