According to the report of the Department of Sports and Physical Training, in 2023, Vietnamese sports won 1,429 international medals (including 571 gold medals, 404 silver medals, 454 bronze medals). In particular, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation competed excellently, exceeding the set target and for the first time won the first place overall at a SEA Games held in a foreign country, with a total of 136 gold medals, 105 silver medals, 118 bronze medals, breaking 12 records and setting 4 SEA Games records; won the Southeast Asian Men's U23 Football Gold Medal for the second consecutive time.
Another highlight in 2023 that needs to be mentioned is the Vietnam Women's Football Team participating in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time. This is a commendable step forward for Vietnamese women's football. Although they could not qualify for many reasons, the "golden girls" of Vietnam played their best, bringing the image of the country, people and true sportsmanship to the world . The Vietnamese flag appeared for the first time, the Vietnamese national anthem was played for the first time at the 2023 World Cup, bringing great pride to millions of fans at home.
At the major regional arena, the 19th Asian Games (ASIAD 19) held in Hangzhou, China, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation completed the set target with 03 gold medals, 05 silver medals, 19 bronze medals, ranking 21st out of 45 countries and territories participating in the Games. As of February 2024, Vietnamese Sports only had 3 official slots to attend the 2024 Paris Olympics (France) in cycling (Nguyen Thi That), shooting (Trinh Thu Vinh) and swimming (Nguyen Huy Hoang).
However, in general, Vietnamese sports have not achieved the biggest goals in 2023, including achievements at ASIAD 19 and tickets to the Olympics. This unintentionally creates a lot of pressure and burden on athletes in 2024, when they have to focus on the world stage, after 2 consecutive years of enjoying the fruits of resounding victories at the SEA Games.
Entering 2024 with the biggest challenge being the Paris Olympics, this is the playground that creates the most real position for each sport, winning medals is an extremely difficult goal, even for developed sports. Vietnamese sports aim to strive for many Olympic places, maximizing the chance of competing for Olympic medals. According to the Department of Sports and Physical Training, with the Paris Olympics, Vietnamese sports aim to have 12-15 places to participate in the following sports: Athletics, swimming, shooting, weightlifting, taekwondo, gymnastics, rowing, cycling, badminton, judo, archery and boxing.
The 2024 Paris Olympics will take place in France from July 26 to August 11, which means there is only half a year left until the opening ceremony. With the current number of 3 athletes officially qualifying for the Paris Olympics, Vietnamese sports are very limited. To achieve the set goal, the High Performance Sports Department 1, 2 and the federations have reviewed the force and expertise. From now until June 2024, it is hoped that in 12 key sports, Vietnamese sports will win more Olympic tickets. In addition to swimming, shooting, cycling, other sports such as athletics, taekwondo, boxing, badminton, gymnastics, weightlifting, fencing, archery or rowing still have a chance to compete.
However, the preparation plan for the Olympics is facing some difficulties as this is the final stage for athletes to complete all professional preparations, some athletes in the key group have suffered injuries and are being actively treated. A strong sport like Vietnam's athletics also has many obstacles. The Olympics will take the 16 strongest teams in the world, while Vietnam is ranked 19th. Among the athletes in this running group, Nguyen Thi Huyen has just retired.
In the current situation, Vietnam may see more Olympic berths in the near future. In weightlifting, Trinh Van Vinh is in the top 10 of the world rankings. He needs to accumulate better scores to ensure a ticket to the Olympics. This is within the reach of the 1995-born weightlifter.
In addition, swimming also plans for swimmer Huy Hoang to win another official spot at the Olympics. In boxing, Nguyen Thi Tam, Ha Thi Linh, and Luu Diem Quynh will strive to compete for an Olympic spot. In shooting, in addition to Trinh Thu Vinh, experts in this sport affirm that there will be another spot to pass the qualifying round, while focusing highly on striving to compete for an Olympic medal.
Meanwhile, taekwondo will have its Asian qualifying round in March 2024. Key athletes Kim Tuyen, Anh Tuyet, Bac Thi Khiem, and Ly Hong Phuc will compete for a spot. In badminton, Nguyen Thuy Linh has a great chance to participate in the Olympics, while two male tennis players, Duc Phat and Hai Dang, are also expected. Gymnastics has four potential athletes: Nguyen Van Khanh Phong, Dang Ngoc Xuan Thien, Trinh Hai Khang, and Van Vi Luong.
Archery also has a World Cup Final in Türkiye in June 2024. In addition, sailing has an Asian qualifying round taking place in April in South Korea.
To achieve the goal of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Department of Sports and Physical Training requires departments and coaching staff to clearly understand the regulations, identify suitable tournaments to develop participation plans based on correct assessment of competitors, maximizing the opportunity to win Olympic tickets for key athletes. In particular, the sports industry needs to focus on reviewing the specific working force of each national team coaching staff, experts to evaluate the best athletes' abilities to invest in a streamlined and compact manner.
In addition, it is necessary to allocate resources to ensure conditions for implementing implementation plans. Based on the reality of existing resources, it is necessary to focus on key tasks, not only paying attention to implementation costs or training and competition equipment, but also paying attention to human factors such as doctors, psychologists, rehabilitation staff, etc. for key athletes.
Vietnam's high-performance sports need to be adjusted to meet changes in actual conditions, helping athletes improve their competitiveness. According to the Department of Sports and Physical Training, the groups of solutions that have been proposed are: a group of solutions on building a high-performance sports force from selecting and identifying athletes; determining athlete training methods; determining athlete training locations; staff, coaches and determining professional solutions for each sport. Next is a group of solutions to improve the capacity of training facilities; solutions to apply science and technology, medical care, recovery and nutrition for athletes; a group of solutions to socialize high-performance sports; ensuring financial resources.../.
