On March 20, the 5th Vietnam International Shrimp Technology Exhibition 2024, with the theme "VietShrimp 2024 - Accompanying shrimp farmers" took place in Ca Mau .
Over the past 20 years, the shrimp industry has always played a pioneering role in exporting seafood products in our country. Every year, shrimp export turnover accounts for about 40 - 45% of the total seafood export value, equivalent to 3.5 - 4 billion USD. Vietnamese shrimp is being exported to about 100 markets, ranking in the top 4 in the world in terms of export.
In 2023, the brackish water shrimp farming area of the whole country will reach 737,000 hectares, with an output of about 1.12 million tons, up 5.5% compared to 2022. However, shrimp export turnover will decrease by nearly 20%. In 2024, shrimp export is forecast to improve and increase by 10 - 15%.
Shrimp exports in 2023 will face many difficulties and decrease by 20% compared to 2022.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Fair, Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang, Chairman of the Vietnam Fisheries Association, Head of the Organizing Committee of VietShrimp 2024, said that last year, the seafood industry in general, including shrimp, still faced difficulties. It is forecasted that this year will still be difficult but there will be changes. To overcome the immediate challenges and develop the shrimp industry sustainably, the Government has directed relevant ministries, branches and localities to join in solving the problems, most importantly, accompanying shrimp farmers to overcome current obstacles.
Leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the People's Committee of Ca Mau province visited the exhibition booths at the Fair.
According to Mr. Thang: ""Accompanying shrimp farmers" is also the theme of this International Shrimp Industry Technology Exhibition. The Organizing Committee hopes that this will be a big forum for 4 groups: Managers - Scientists - Businessmen - Farmers to sit together to find the most effective solution to bring the shrimp industry back to the growth trajectory, while realizing the goal of sustainable development for Vietnamese shrimp".
Mr. Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasized that if the shrimp industry wants to develop, it must apply science and technology to production to create motivation to improve productivity and quality. This determines the competitiveness of Vietnamese shrimp with other countries in the world. However, production must focus on environmental protection and emission reduction.
National shrimp output in 2023 increased by 5.5%
VietShrimp 2024 has about 200 booths of 150 domestic and international enterprises and organizations operating in the seafood industry in general and shrimp in particular. The fair is organized by the Vietnam Fisheries Association in coordination with the Department of Fisheries, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ca Mau and the Vietnam Fisheries Magazine.
