Lam Dong requests immediate handling of waste flowing into Dan Kia Lake

(PLVN) - Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Ngoc Phuc requested to urgently collect and treat waste flowing into Dan Kia reservoir in Lac Duong district. At the same time, invest in more waste tanks, strengthen propaganda to raise awareness of people living around the lake area; propose sanctions to handle cases of violations of waste discharge into the environment.

Faced with the situation of waste being dumped into Dan Kia reservoir, especially after heavy rains, on May 6, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Phuc - Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee chaired a working session with Lac Duong district on the management, operation and sanitation of the reservoir.

According to Mr. Phuc, Dan Kia Lake is not only a project for irrigation and hydropower but also a source of water for daily life of the people of Lac Duong district and Da Lat city. Therefore, the units must seriously carry out the assigned tasks. In particular, it is necessary to focus on solutions to ensure the reserve and quality of Dan Kia Lake's water source.

Regarding the situation of waste flowing into the lake, especially during the rainy season, it is necessary to handle it immediately to avoid prolonged backlog. Functional units need to form groups to exchange relevant information as well as coordinate to solve the environmental safety management and water quality of Dan Kia Lake.

Along with that, the units need to propose solutions and funding for the trash screen system and this issue must be implemented this year. At the same time, speed up the progress of the lake dredging project to increase water storage capacity; conduct annual dredging of tributaries of streams flowing into the lake and study solutions for bidding for garbage collection and cleaning in the Dan Kia lake area.

The Vice Chairman of Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee requested relevant units to organize the collection of pesticide waste in the Dan Kia lake area in May 2025; Continue to invest in more garbage tanks, strengthen propaganda to raise awareness of people producing around the lake area.

In addition, the locality needs to consider establishing a working group to handle the issue of illegal waste discharge into the environment, and propose sanctions to handle violations. Waste collection, especially pesticide packaging, must be carried out periodically and regularly to thoroughly resolve the environmental problem for Dan Kia Lake's water source.

According to the leader of Lac Duong district, Dan Kia lake supplies domestic water with a capacity of over 50,000 m3/day and night for part of Lac Duong district and Da Lat city; provides irrigation water for 350 hectares of cultivated land and supplies water for the operation of Ankoret hydroelectric plant.

There are currently 1,600 hectares of agricultural production around the lake. During the rainy season, a large amount of agricultural waste flows into Dan Kia Lake through streams, and the district can only collect 50%. Lac Duong District has also installed a system of garbage collection bins, but managing the source of waste to the lake is very difficult.
