Female patient, 58 years old, in Vinh Long , has a history of 3 kidney stone surgeries in 15 years. However, the stones still recur, urinary tract infections, the patient often has fever, pain, affecting health, daily activities and life. The patient came to Cho Ray Hospital for examination and treatment.
Combining two forms of endoscopy for minimal intervention and maximum effectiveness
On May 11, Dr. Chau Quy Thuan - Deputy Head of the Department of Urology, Cho Ray Hospital said that the patient wanted to have his kidney removed because he had undergone surgery three times but it did not work. In addition, wearing a kidney catheter was quite inconvenient.
"Currently, the renal ureter excretes about 300-400 ml of urine per day. In addition, the patient can still urinate naturally as usual. Examination shows that the right kidney function is still normal, so there is no indication for kidney removal," said Dr. Thuan.
According to Dr. Thuan, in this case, if open surgery is used to remove the stones, it is easy to have complications, infections and high costs. The team decided to choose a new method, minimal intervention, combining 2 endoscopic approaches in the same surgery. One approach is through the skin to remove the stones, the other is upstream endoscopic approach from below to remove the stones, find and crush the stones.
After surgery, the patient recovered well, the application of 2 endoscopic techniques helps to minimize invasion and completely remove stones in one surgery. This form is a trend in the world , Cho Ray Hospital is the pioneer in Vietnam.
