Recently, Master, Doctor CKII Nguyen Tien Thanh - Member of Vietnam Dermatology Association shared that he had just received a case of a 40-year-old woman, living in Thanh Tri ( Hanoi ) who came for examination with inflammatory acne lesions, pustules, edema and a lot of discharge.
Information shared by the patient said that 2 weeks ago, this woman went to a spa in Long Bien district to use a microneedling and RPR treatment for melasma and acne at a cost of nearly 50 million VND/treatment.
After rolling the needle twice, each time 1 week apart, the woman had a solution applied to her face that felt quite burning. However, when the beauty salon staff encouraged her to apply it, the more it peeled, the more beautiful her skin would be, so the woman still tried to apply the medicine.
The woman's skin condition did not improve, but instead, more and more pustules appeared scattered all over her face, which then increased in number and spread, accompanied by her face becoming painful and uncomfortable. Worried, the patient went back to the spa to ask about her facial condition, but the staff there replied that it was "normal" and sent her home.
The woman's face was red, swollen, pus-filled, and very painful. (Photo provided by the doctor).
Master, Doctor Nguyen Tien Thanh stated that the patient was diagnosed with a skin infection, a complication due to microneedling and was prescribed antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, topical medications, and skin washes. Not only the above patient, Doctor Thanh warned that on average, he would receive 10-15 cases of complications after cosmetic procedures such as microneedling, RPR, laser treatment for melasma, skin peeling, etc. every month. In the age range of 20-40.
According to Dr. Thanh, currently on Facebook, social networks and beauty establishments are advertising recklessly about microneedling methods to treat melasma and acne, causing many people to join groups to receive advice on microneedling or buy needles to do it themselves and only see specialists when complications occur for treatment.
When coming for examination, most of the patients' skin conditions were itchy, red, swollen, patchy, with melasma, hyperpigmentation, acne outbreaks, infected dermatitis, pyoderma... very serious, causing negative effects on skin health.
With the needle rolling method, Dr. Tien Thanh said that the treatment can help rejuvenate the skin, improve wrinkles, large pores... thanks to the mechanism of creating "fake" wounds, helping to absorb topical medications through the skin better. However, needle rolling is not simple and if performed incorrectly at unlicensed facilities, it can cause serious consequences and complications.
From the above case, Master, Doctor, CKII Nguyen Tien Thanh recommends that people need to be alert and carefully research information before beautifying themselves with any method, including microneedling. In particular, people should go to reputable, specialized facilities to avoid unfortunate accidents.
