Phuoc Tich ancient village was established in 1470, under the reign of Le Thanh Tong, surrounded by O Lau river, in Phong Hoa commune, Phong Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province, 40km north of Hue city. After Duong Lam ancient village (Son Tay, Hanoi ), Phuoc Tich ancient village is the second ancient village recognized by the state and granted a National Monument certificate. Phuoc Tich ancient village still retains a series of cultural values imbued with the North Central countryside such as cultural and religious architectural institutions, natural landscapes, and village landscapes. With the advantages of ancient communal houses, relics, communal houses, pagodas, temples, churches, Cham Pa cultural relics, etc., Phuoc Tich ancient village is now becoming an attractive destination for domestic and foreign tourists . In the village, there are currently 26 ancient communal houses, over 100 years old, including 12 houses with special architectural and artistic values and 12 water wharves typical of Hue countryside. Phuoc Tich people have promoted tourism products such as visiting ancient garden houses, homestays, experiencing baking, pottery making, cycling, boating on O Lau river, releasing flower lanterns, etc. In addition to architectural works, in Phuoc Tich village there is an ancient fig tree over 500 years old, recognized as a heritage tree in 2015; the tree is 25m high, with a trunk circumference of about 6m. According to Phuoc Tich people, the ancient fig tree is associated with the existence and development of the village, the meeting place where many important decisions were made; especially during the resistance war, the hollow inside the tree trunk was once a secret base for revolutionary soldiers. When mentioning the ancient village of Phuoc Tich, we must definitely talk about the once famous traditional pottery making craft. According to the village elders, pottery making used to be the main occupation of the people of Phuoc Tich Village. Thanks to talented and creative pottery artisans, Phuoc Tich pottery products have their own unique mark, creating a position in the market. Boats carrying pottery along 12 water ports along the O Lau River regularly go back and forth to all regions for trading.
Phuoc Tich pottery is fired very carefully, the kiln is solid, has high temperature, thanks to that the product does not crack, is not brittle, retains heat, retains flavor. The patterns on Phuoc Tich products are delicately carved, very unique so they cannot be confused with any other product. In the past, Phuoc Tich pottery surpassed many other famous pottery products, becoming the only choice in the Hue Royal Palace. Today, Phuoc Tich pottery is being revived thanks to young artisans who are passionate about the traditional craft left by their ancestors. When visiting the ancient village, tourists can experience making pottery with the artisans. In 2022, the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province approved the planning for the preservation, restoration, and promotion of the value of the architectural and artistic relics of Phuoc Tich ancient village. The project aims to preserve and promote the heritage value of Phuoc Tich ancient village in association with sustainable tourism development and create connections and develop economic , cultural and social spaces. This is an important premise for the People's Committee of Phong Dien district to have a basis for establishing investment calling projects, synchronously developing infrastructure, ensuring the ecological landscape and environment suitable for the architectural and artistic space of the ancient village (Photo: Doan Quyet Thang). Recently, the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province has submitted a document to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requesting agreement on the policy of ranking Phuoc Tich Ancient Village as a special national relic. Mr. Nguyen Duc Loc, Director of the Thua Thien Hue Historical Museum, said that the unit had previously coordinated with the People's Committee of Phong Dien district to prepare a brief biography to submit to the Provincial People's Committee to ask for the Central Government's opinion. According to Mr. Loc, since being recognized as a National Monument, Phuoc Tich ancient village has been exploited and preserved quite well. When recognized as a special National Monument, Thua Thien Hue province will develop more projects to promote the cultural values of this unique ancient village, in order to preserve and maintain the unique cultural features here.
