Flower village in season for Tet

Việt NamViệt Nam23/01/2025

During the Lunar New Year holiday, the demand for flowers and ornamental plants increases significantly. Overcoming the difficulties caused by Typhoon No. 3 in early September 2024, flower and ornamental plant villages in Dong Trieu City are currently bustling with activity in preparation for the Tet flower season.

People go directly to the orchards to choose and buy kumquats in Binh Khe ward (Dong Trieu city).

Binh Khe is the largest flower and ornamental plant growing area in Dong Trieu City, with a total area of approximately 130 hectares. The main types of flowers and ornamental plants grown in the area are concentrated in this region, such as: dahlias (over 36 hectares); chrysanthemums and lilies (nearly 2 hectares); kumquats and peach blossoms (13 hectares); and yellow apricot blossoms (60 hectares)... Ms. Nguyen Thi Lieu (a kumquat grower in Binh Khe) shared: After typhoon number 3, my family quickly propped up and reinforced about 700 kumquat trees. Despite our efforts to recover, we only managed to save over 400 trees. For those that survived, we are trying our best to care for them, shaping them beautifully to supply the market. This year, the selling price of kumquats ranges from 1 to 1.7 million VND per tree.

At the high-tech orchid farm of Mr. Le Xuan Liem's family (Trai Moi area) - one of the largest and most modern flower farms in Binh Khe district - orchid pots are blooming beautifully. Although the greenhouse system collapsed and many pieces of equipment were completely damaged by Typhoon No. 3, with careful monitoring and special care, the orchids are still thriving, producing beautiful flowers, and are ready to supply the market in time for Tet (Lunar New Year).

Mr. Pham Van Phong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Binh Khe Ward, said: To promote the consumption of agricultural products, especially Tet flowers and ornamental plants in the area, Dong Trieu City has focused on investing in infrastructure with many new roads being formed to make it easier for people and tourists to access gardens. The promotion of products on digital platforms is also being emphasized by the government and the people.

Along with Binh Khe, flower growers in Hong Phong ward are also busy preparing for Tet (Lunar New Year) flower season. With over 60 hectares dedicated to flower cultivation, the main flower products in Hong Phong ward are lilies, chrysanthemums, and lotuses. In recent times, the local authorities have invested in transportation infrastructure, irrigation canals, production guidance, and the development of new varieties, thereby helping people feel secure in their production and development.

As a result, income from flower cultivation has increased 2.5 times compared to rice and vegetable farming. This year, the entire ward will supply 4-5 million flowers of various types to the market, serving the needs of people in the province and neighboring localities such as Hanoi , Hai Duong, and Hai Phong. It is known that in the coming time, Hong Phong ward will continue to review and register to expand the planned area, transform the crop structure, and help improve income and quality of life for its residents.

Over the years, Dong Trieu City has consistently focused on restructuring its agricultural sector, shifting from vegetable cultivation to the cultivation of high - value flowers and ornamental plants to meet market demands. To date, the city has over 400 hectares dedicated to growing flowers and ornamental plants, concentrated in the Binh Khe, Binh Duong, Hong Phong, An Sinh, Trang An, and Hoang Que areas. Many high-quality and high-yield flower and ornamental plant products for Tet (Lunar New Year) celebrations include gladiolus, lilies, chrysanthemums, orchids, peach blossoms, and kumquats.

Mr. Le Quoc Ruyen, Head of the Economic Department of Dong Trieu City, said: The unit has coordinated with the Central Institute of Horticulture to restore several flower varieties such as lilies, hyacinths, gladioli, etc., for farmers to grow to serve the Tet market. The average income from these flowers reaches 300-400 million VND/hectare. In addition, there are more than 10 hectares of yellow apricot blossom trees, yielding high income, with some trees even worth 400-500 million VND. In the future, the city will continue to focus on investing in rural infrastructure, canals, cold storage facilities, developing new flower varieties, investing in science and technology, and enhancing the value of flower crops.

To serve the Tet market in 2025 and meet the needs of the people, Dong Trieu City will organize a flower and ornamental plant fair combined with trade and OCOP products from January 14 to 28; and a flower market, displaying and promoting Ngoa Van yellow apricot blossoms and ornamental plants from Binh Khe ward from January 9 to 28.
