TPO – For a long time, flower cultivation in Tien Du commune, Phu Ninh district, Phu Tho province has been considered the main and most effective occupation, bringing prosperous and sustainable springs to the people of the flower village.

These days, farmers in Thuong village, Tien Du commune, are busy all day in their flower gardens, from lighting lamps and planting seedlings to caring for various types of chrysanthemums in preparation for the 2025 Lunar New Year. Tien Du commune has nearly 30 households engaged in flower cultivation.

Ms. Le Thi Nam (60 years old), a farmer with over 20 years of experience in flower cultivation in Thuong village, said that flower cultivation dates back to the 2000s. Initially, only a few households grew flowers to sell at the market during Tet (Lunar New Year). Later, seeing that the profession could bring high income, flower cultivation became more concentrated and organized.

"My family has about 3 sao (approximately 3,000 square meters) of land for growing chrysanthemums, and we regularly intercrop them throughout the year. To prepare for the 2025 Lunar New Year, my family will plant about 20,000 chrysanthemums to supply to the market," Mrs. Nam added.

Next to Mrs. Nam's flower garden, Mr. Dang Xuan Huy said that in the past, people used to grow many different types of flowers such as roses, lilies, and chrysanthemums... However, due to the soil, varieties, and cultivation techniques, lilies and roses are more difficult to grow than chrysanthemums; the economic efficiency is not high. Therefore, flower-growing households have switched to growing chrysanthemums: diamond chrysanthemums, long-petaled chrysanthemums, and purple-petaled chrysanthemums.

According to Mr. Huy, the locals also actively participate in training courses on science and technology, so flower cultivation models are developing more and more. Here, the end of the year is always the busiest time for the locals. Because growing flowers is not only a livelihood, but also a joy and passion for those who create beauty. After meticulously sowing, nurturing, pruning, and watering their "children," the Tet season is when the growers reap the rewards of their labor.

According to estimates, during the 2025 Lunar New Year, Tien Du commune's flower village will supply the market with approximately 200,000 chrysanthemums of various types.

In recent years, partly due to climate change and partly due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the quality of chrysanthemums and their selling prices have been affected, leading to much instability. However, the farmers remain diligent, not abandoning their fields or their profession. As Mr. Huy said, if they stay committed and work hard in their hometown's fields, they may not get rich quickly, but their economy will develop sustainably and their lives will be stable.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hong Chat, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tien Du commune, the flower-growing craft village started in 2001 and has been around for over 20 years. Initially, only one or two households grew flowers to sell at the market. Recognizing that flower cultivation brought higher economic value than other vegetables, the people of Thuong village cultivated them in a more organized and concentrated manner. To this day, chrysanthemums remain the main crop in agricultural production in Thuong village.

According to Mr. Chat, the commune currently has a plan to expand the area for flower cultivation, focusing on converting flower varieties, planting more types of flowers such as lilies and roses, supplementing people's knowledge, and investing in infrastructure for the development of the craft village.
