11,591 5G base stations have been installed, which is nearly 8% of the total number of 4G stations.

To date, the country has only 11,591 5G base stations; 26% of the population has access to 5G services.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology , as of early May 2025, network operators had installed 11,591 5G base transceiver stations (BTS), equivalent to 7.72% of the 4G stations. Approximately 26% of the population has access to 5G services.

According to the plan, the number of 5G base stations will gradually increase in the final months of 2025. Specifically, the ratio of 5G base stations to 4G base stations will reach 10.3% in May; 14.9% in September; 24.9% in October; 43.7% in November; and 57.5% in December 2025.

Currently, 4G mobile coverage has reached 99.8% of the population; 99.3% of villages have mobile broadband connectivity. The percentage of mobile phone subscribers using smartphones is 90.5%. Mobile broadband access speed is 150.43 Mbps (according to Speedtest).

Previously, after receiving licenses to establish networks and provide services in 2024, the Military Telecommunications and Industry Corporation (Viettel) launched its 5G service in October 2024. The Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) launched its 5G service in December 2024. MobiFone Telecommunications Corporation launched its 5G service in March 2025.

This afternoon, May 17th, representatives from several network operators stated that the reason for the surge in new 5G base station installations in the last months of the year is due to the need to complete bidding procedures.

According to regulations, the bidding process takes 3 months. Equipment installation also requires approximately 2-3 months.

At the second meeting of the Government Steering Committee on Science, Technology, Innovation, Digital Transformation and Project 06, held this morning, May 17th, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh instructed relevant ministries and agencies to develop a synchronous and modern digital infrastructure, especially telecommunications satellites, the national telecommunications backbone, expand 5G coverage, the Internet of Things infrastructure, and bring the National Data Center into operation…
