'Taking water from the Lunar New Year's shrine' in Hai Phong

Traditionally, on New Year's Eve, irrigation companies would take advantage of the opportunity to draw water into the system. In folklore, this is commonly known as "drawing water for the Lunar New Year."

The Trung Trang irrigation headworks, belonging to Da Do Irrigation Works Exploitation One-Member Limited Company, is the main water source serving agricultural production for nearly 30,000 hectares of rice and other crops in 16 communes and wards, providing raw water for freshwater production for domestic use and clean water for several industrial zones and clusters.

After several days of saline intrusion preventing water from entering the system, on New Year's Eve, after checking the water source to ensure quality, the Trung Trang Irrigation Station implemented technical measures to welcome the first freshwater of the year into the system to serve production and daily life.

Mr. Bui Van Quang, an operator at the Trung Trang Irrigation Station, shared: “This year's dry season has seen very complex saltwater intrusion situations. At many times, salinity levels have risen so high that it's impossible to draw water into the system. Therefore, staff and workers at the station have to be on duty 24/7, constantly measuring salinity levels. When water quality is assured, they will operate to draw water into the system.”

Workers opened the Trung Trang sluice gate to allow the first freshwater of the year into the system for production and daily life.

With the motto of ensuring no water shortage for production and daily life, this year, despite the complex situation of saltwater intrusion affecting water quality and the fact that the water extraction time is only about 1/3 - 1/4 of that in previous years, Da Do Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited has still proactively implemented many solutions to increase water storage in the system.

Accordingly, the company focuses on dredging canals, repairing main sluice gates, regularly checking water salinity every 15 minutes, and making the most of opportunities to draw water when conditions permit. As a result, the water supply for production and daily life in the area is basically ensured.

Welcoming the first water of the year is a traditional custom with many meanings. Therefore, every year, on New Year's Eve, the water-welcoming ceremony is held to pray for a year of favorable weather, abundant water, bountiful harvests, and a happy life.
