Korean Football Federation 'cannot say anything' about coach Klinsmann's future

" We cannot say anything about Jurgen Klinsmann's work. The Korea Football Association (KFA) has received a lot of criticism but needs to have a thorough assessment of the head coach's work. I believe we need various measures to evaluate this issue. In any case, we will consider the situation most carefully ," KFA Vice President Han Jun Hee said on the One Match Korea program.

The future of South Korea's head coach Jurgen Klinsmann is becoming a hot topic among fans in the country. The South Korean team reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Asian Cup but performed disappointingly and was defeated by Jordan.

If only counting the official 90 minutes of each match, the Korean team drew 4, lost 1 and won 1 out of 6 matches in this year's tournament. In the round of 16, they drew with Saudi Arabia after 120 minutes and won in a penalty shootout. Against Australia in the quarter-finals, the Korean team came back in 2 extra halves and won the ticket to the next round.

The Korean team often has to come from behind against weaker opponents and score late goals. The Korean team's play lacks highlights and does not show superiority.

Coach Jurgen Klinsmann mainly relies on the individual brilliance of stars playing in Europe such as Son Heung-min (Tottenham), Lee Kang-in (PSG), Hwang Hee-chan (Wolverhampton). When these players do not play at their best, the Korean team falls into a deadlock.

However, according to the Korean press, one of the reasons why the KFA has to consider the future of coach Klinsmann is that the contract between the two sides has 2.5 years left and the compensation amount could be up to 4.5 million USD.

Mr. Klinsmann took the job in Korea in March 2023, replacing his predecessor Paulo Bento. The former player did not help the Korean team improve much in terms of skills. The victories of Son Heung-min and his teammates mainly came from matches against weaker opponents.
