Quang Liem achieved this ranking thanks to his championship defense at the recent Biel Grandmaster 2023 International Chess Tournament in Switzerland.
Quang Liem achieved the highest ranking of his career
In this tournament, Quang Liem was the champion with the highest score of 32.5 (19 points in standard chess, 5 points in rapid chess and 8.5 points in blitz chess), surpassing Vincent Keymer (Germany) who ranked second with 31.5 points. This title brought Quang Liem 10,000 CHF (about 275 million VND).
More importantly, the wins in the standard chess event at the tournament, especially against China's top player - Yu Yangyi, helped Quang Liem accumulate 11.8 more Elo points to have a total Elo of 2,740, the highest Elo level in the career of the 1991-born player, and at the same time rise to 15th place in the world for the first time.
This is good news and a great motivation for Quang Liem to compete at the 2023 Chess World Cup taking place in Baku (Azerbaijan), where the No. 1 Vietnamese player is seeded No. 15 and exempted from the first round. In the second round, Quang Liem will face Serbian player Ivan Ivanisevic (Elo 2,530). Also at the 2023 Chess World Cup, Vietnam will have 3 other representatives: Le Tuan Minh, Vo Thi Kim Phung and Nguyen Thi Mai Hung.
