Ten Hag could lead Leverkusen. |
According to Kicker (Germany), the Dutch strategist is considered one of the potential candidates to replace Xabi Alonso, in the context that the Spanish coach is likely to leave Leverkusen to lead Real Madrid.
Ten Hag, 55, was sacked by Manchester United last October after a disappointing start to the 2024/25 season. However, he still left his mark by helping the "Red Devils" win two domestic titles, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, in addition to making a big splash with Ajax Amsterdam in the 2018/19 Champions League.
Although there have been no official negotiations between Leverkusen and Ten Hag, the German team is still actively gathering information and monitoring his situation in case Alonso leaves. Notably, Ten Hag used to be the coach of Bayern Munich's reserve team, so he is no stranger to the German football environment.
Previously, Ten Hag hinted at the possibility of not returning to coaching immediately, saying he was enjoying time off with his family and thinking carefully about the next step in his career.
However, a project that fits his ambition and coaching philosophy like Bayer Leverkusen, along with attractive remuneration, could be the ideal destination for him to return.
Whether Ten Hag becomes Leverkusen's manager or not is ultimately up to Xabi Alonso, but Ten Hag's name is clearly still very much in demand in Europe. If he returns, he will have the opportunity to prove himself in a competitive environment, and continue his unfinished journey.
Before being noticed by Leverkusen, Ten Hag had applied for the hot seat at Leipzig but his CV was rejected by Red Bull's global director, Jurgen Klopp.
