The United Nations (UN) said on September 20 it was "deeply concerned" after Israeli airstrikes on the Lebanese capital Beirut and called on all parties to exercise "maximum restraint".

“We are of course deeply concerned by the escalation of tensions… including the deadly airstrikes we witnessed in Beirut today,” said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
We call on all parties to de-escalate immediately. All must exercise maximum restraint."
Regarding the incident, on the same day, Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli airstrike in the south of the capital Beirut that killed a senior commander of the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement and several others.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said the attack was a violation of international law and regulations, as well as a violation of Lebanon's sovereignty , territorial integrity and national security.
In another development, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on September 20 voiced new concerns about the escalation of tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in his sixth call with his Israeli counterpart in less than a week, urging a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
Mr Austin focused on a diplomatic solution after Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant spoke of a new phase of war.
Earlier, also on September 20, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declared that the country would not stop after the assassination of senior Hezbollah commanders in Beirut.
On social network X, Mr. Gallant wrote: "The sequence of actions in the new phase will continue until we achieve the goal of bringing the people of the North back home safely."
On the same day, the Hezbollah movement in Lebanon confirmed that senior commander Ibrahim Aqil was killed by Israeli fire, hours after Israel announced the death of this figure in an airstrike on the capital Beirut.
Hezbollah said Aqil, “one of its great leaders”, was killed “on his way to Jerusalem”.
