Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, stated that the UN is deeply concerned by reports that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has carried out numerous missile attacks targeting objectives in Syria and Iraq.
He called on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint, avoid further escalating tensions in the region, and prevent more serious consequences.
UN Secretary-General Guterres stressed that all security concerns between Iraq and Iran should be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means, in accordance with the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and good neighborly relations.
Meanwhile, Reuters , citing the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, reported that Iraq has officially filed a complaint against Iran with the UN Security Council regarding Tehran's attack.
The complaint was submitted to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council through the permanent mission of Iraq to the UN in New York.
Earlier, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry condemned the Iranian attack, warning that its government "will take all necessary legal steps," including "filing a complaint with the Security Council."
Iraq also announced that it would release the results of its investigation into the attacks, to prove to the public the falsehood of the accusations made by those responsible for the attacks.
In addition, Iraq has recalled its ambassador to Iran, Nassir Abdel Mohsen, for consultations.
According to a statement from the IRGC, on January 15, the group launched a series of missiles targeting "terrorist facilities and those linked to Israel's Mossad intelligence agency" in Syria and the Kurdish region of Iraq in response to "terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of many Iranians."
On January 3rd, a terrorist attack occurred at a cemetery in the Iranian city of Kerman – the site of a memorial service for senior IRGC commander Qassem Soleimani – killing nearly 100 people and injuring many others. The self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization claimed responsibility for two explosions at the cemetery.
