On May 20, the Egyptian Red Crescent Society (ERC) received 27 tons of relief goods provided by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and funded by the European Union (EU) to support Sudanese refugees taking refuge in this North African country.

At a press conference organized by the ERC on May 20, Egyptian Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Qabbaj emphasized that the aid, which includes medical supplies and personal protective equipment, will be delivered to Sudanese refugees in Egypt.
According to her, the UN and EU's provision of aid to support Egypt's efforts to assist Sudanese refugees shows the appreciation and trust that the international community has for the ERC.
Egypt has recently implemented a number of measures to support Sudanese refugees. The Egyptian Ministry of Social Solidarity has a budget of around 150 million Egyptian pounds (over 4.8 million USD) for domestic and international relief efforts.
The EU and its Member States are committed to supporting Egypt and Sudan in this difficult time, Christian Berger, the head of the EU delegation to Egypt, added. He said the EU is working with partners to support Egypt in its efforts to ensure that Sudanese refugees meet their basic social and health needs. The EU has also provided €200,000 to the ERC to support Sudanese in Egypt.
UNDP Permanent Representative in Egypt, Mr. Alessandro Fracassetti, said that UNDP's first objective is to strengthen the capacity of the government and relevant local authorities to provide vital basic services to the affected people.
ERC has provided thousands of services through relief centers for Sudanese refugees at the border crossings with Egypt including Arqeen and Qustul.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), since the armed conflict broke out in Sudan in mid-April, 120,000 Sudanese have fled to neighboring countries, of which Egypt has received 98,000 Sudanese.
Earlier, on May 7, the Arab League Council issued a resolution on the establishment of an Arab ministerial contact group to liaise with parties in Sudan and influential countries to reach a solution to the crisis in this African country.
