Continuous earthquakes in Myanmar, warning that faults in Vietnam may "wake up"

Seismologists warn that large earthquakes and aftershocks in Myanmar could "awaken" many geological fault zones in Vietnam in the future, so vigilance is needed.

According to AP News Agency, on April 13, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in central Myanmar, identified as the strongest aftershock since the .

The epicenter of the earthquake was located between Mandalay and Naypyitaw, at a depth of 7.7 - 20km. People in Wundwin town (Mandalay state) felt the shaking clearly.

Previously, Myanmar recorded about 468 aftershocks since the major earthquake on March 28 to April 12. The March 28 earthquake caused severe damage with more than 3,600 people dead and more than 5,000 injured.

According to the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences ), on April 13, in Vietnam, there was only one earthquake (induced) at 1:28:50 a.m. with a magnitude of 3 on the Richter scale in Kon Plong district, Kon Tum province and there was no impact from aftershocks in Myanmar.

However, experts have recently warned that seismic activity in Myanmar could still affect geological faults in Vietnam in the future, such as the Song Ma, Lai Chau - Dien Bien - Son La, Song Ca and Kon Tum - Tay Nguyen faults. The “awakening” of these faults could lead to the risk of earthquakes in the future, especially in densely populated areas such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Specifically, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Hong Phuong, Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Geophysics, said that the earthquake in Myanmar occurred along the Sagaing fault - one of the largest and most active fault systems in Southeast Asia.

The activity of this fault could spread tectonic stress to neighboring faults, many of which are located in Vietnam, in the future, especially if there is a spillover effect from large tremors in neighboring regions such as Myanmar.

Currently, Vietnamese authorities are closely monitoring the situation and recommending that people raise awareness of earthquake prevention, especially in high-risk areas.
