Landslide kills 1, China activates emergency response system

The number of dead and missing victims from the landslide was announced by local authorities on social media WeChat this afternoon, July 9, according to Reuters. They added that they are trying to prevent further disasters in the area as operations continue.

China's Ministry of Emergency Management has activated a level-four emergency response system for geological disasters and dispatched a working group to the scene to guide emergency response, according to Xinhua. The ministry also called on authorities to find out the cause of the landslide.

Meanwhile, China's National Meteorological Center on Tuesday extended its orange alert, the second-highest level of warning for high temperatures, as a scorching heatwave sweeps across large swathes of the country, according to Xinhua.

During the day, temperatures in parts of northern China, southern China, the Sichuan basin, Hubei, Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang could exceed 35 degrees Celsius, according to China's National Meteorological Center.

In some areas of Hebei, Henan , Shandong, Zhejiang, Fujian and Inner Mongolia, temperatures could exceed 40 degrees Celsius.

According to China's National Meteorological Center, people should avoid outdoor activities during high temperatures and workers should shorten their exposure to high temperatures.
