According to TrendForce, Tata has received orders to produce the new iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, which are expected to launch in the second half of this year. As is Apple's practice, the new suppliers will be assigned to produce lower-end models in small quantities.
Tata Group will be the world's fourth iPhone assembly partner. |
TrendForce added that Tata's iPhone assembly orders are expected to reach 5% of total orders in 2023. Due to the impact of the epidemic and geopolitics , Apple is looking to accelerate the pace of diversifying its supply sources, and India is a typical example. This shows that the risk of losing China's central role in Apple's supply chain is getting bigger.
Tata has completed the acquisition of Wistron’s 2.2 million square foot iPhone manufacturing plant, just over 50 kilometers from Bangalore. The deal includes eight iPhone assembly lines and 10,000 workers, including thousands of engineers. Wistron will continue to be the iPhone service partner in India.
It also marks Wistron’s exit from the iPhone assembly business. The Taiwanese company’s operations have been affected by employee riots over allegations of labor exploitation and unpaid wages, prompting Apple to intervene and investigate whether Wistron is violating its supplier regulations.
