Dubai's series of strict regulations for tourists.

Tourists who take photos of government buildings, swear, or bring books with magical content like Harry Potter may face trouble when visiting Dubai.

Dubai, UAE, is famous for its glitz and glamour, with its five-star hotels, luxurious restaurants, and infinity pools. However, the city also has a darker side that few tourists understand – its extremely strict laws. Below are some seemingly harmless actions by tourists that could land them in jail when visiting Dubai.

Take a photo

In its UAE travel advisory, the British government notes that taking photos of certain government buildings, military bases, and private homes without permission is illegal in Dubai.

Simon Hood, CEO of the transport company John Mason International, said that even if travelers simply take a quick photo of someone in a public place, they can break the law and get into trouble.

Use a virtual private network (VPN).

According to Simon, people in the UK can use VPNs to access websites that are restricted or for security reasons. But in Dubai, using a VPN to access blocked websites is illegal.

"Many tourists are using this app on their electronic devices but forget to turn it off when they arrive in Dubai. And they find out they are breaking the law," Simon said.

Speaking without thinking on social media

According to the UK government website gov.uk, posting videos , photos, or content that criticizes the government, businesses, individuals, or relates to incidents in the UAE is illegal. An Irish tourist is facing several years in prison in Dubai for sending a ninja emoji to an acquaintance to imply that the person stole something.

Simon added that sharing anything, such as posting photos of strangers or videos of an accident, could also result in tourists facing charges of "defamation and insult," as well as fines or imprisonment.

Prohibited items and substances

The US government has warned that poppy seeds, even though they are only an ingredient in bread making, are on the list of controlled substances when entering the UAE. Codeine-containing drugs are also on this list.

"If you carry these without a prescription or proper documentation, you could get into trouble," Simon said.

Drones, e-cigarettes, and skateboards also require special permits. Books on magical or wizarding themes, such as the Harry Potter series, may be subject to more thorough inspection by customs.

One of Simon's clients once used newspaper to wrap items in a consignment shipment. Customs flagged the shipment because of the provocative images and headlines on the newspaper, causing the shipment to be delayed by several weeks and incurring additional costs.

Premarital relationships

Consensual sex between individuals over 18 is legal in Dubai unless the other person or their family files a complaint. However, if one partner is under 18, the tourist faces imprisonment. If both are under 18, they may also be prosecuted but may not serve time in prison.

Same-sex marriage and sexual activity are not recognized in the UAE. Public kissing is not encouraged by the government, and tourists may be arrested for doing so.

Swearing

Swearing and rude behavior, including online, are illegal and considered impolite. Tourists face imprisonment or deportation.

While driving, passengers who make offensive gestures or use vulgar language directed at other drivers will be subject to fines, imprisonment, or deportation.

Alcohol, drugs

Drinking alcohol and getting drunk in public is illegal in the UAE. Visitors can buy and drink alcohol at licensed hotels, restaurants, and bars. If they wish to drink at home, they need to obtain a permit.

The UAE government has declared zero tolerance for drug-related crimes. Possession of small amounts of illegal drugs can result in a three-month prison sentence, while drug trafficking can be punishable by death.

Herbal medicines and products containing cannabidiol (CBD - a naturally occurring compound found in cannabis) are illegal. Even skincare products and e-cigarettes containing CBD oil can lead to customers being accused of criminal offenses.

Dress like a woman

It is illegal for men to dress like women. Women's clothing should cover their shoulders and knees, and should not reveal underwear. Swimsuits should only be worn at the beach or swimming pool.

Regulations regarding Ramadan

During Ramadan, eating, drinking, and smoking are prohibited from sunrise to sunset. Non-Muslims must also observe this rule in public.

Simon added that even outside of Ramadan, eating on public transport is considered illegal.
