Sprinting is a high-intensity exercise – running at your optimum speed for a short period of time. Sprinting can have a number of benefits, from improving cardiovascular fitness to building lean muscle mass, says Varun Rattan, a personal trainer and co-founder of The Body Science Academy in India.

Even just one sprint session a week can make a noticeable difference in your overall fitness level. Sprinting not only burns fat, but can also increase your endurance, speed, and agility. It’s an effective way to build muscle in your legs.

Additionally, sprinting triggers protein synthesis, increases the release of testosterone and growth hormone, and improves insulin sensitivity. All of these benefits contribute to increased muscle growth, strength, and fat loss, according to the Indian Express .

What should you pay attention to when sprinting?

To prepare for a sprint, start with five minutes of light activity, such as jogging, to increase blood flow and warm up your body. Then, do simple dynamic exercises that focus on your hips, ankles, etc.

It is also important to learn to slow down gradually when sprinting instead of stopping suddenly to avoid injury.

Who should not sprint?

Dr Subhendu Mohanty, interventional cardiologist, Sharda Hospital (India), says sprinting is not for everyone.

For people who are used to regular exercise, it is great to do powerful interval leg exercises, such as sprinting. But for obese people, sprinting can be harmful to the knees.

Similarly, elderly people or diabetics, who are not used to walking, if suddenly sprinting can lead to a heart attack. So the effect varies from person to person, Dr Mohanty said, according to the Indian Express.
