Like several countries in the region, Myanmar was also severely affected by Cyclone Yagi . Heavy rains for several days caused flooding in many parts of Myanmar.
Myanmar Fire and Rescue Force said that as of this morning, September 13, the number of people killed by floods in this country has increased from 17 to 36, while more than 50,000 people have been evacuated.
According to satellite imagery analysis by the Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU), about 162 square kilometers of land around the capital Naypyitaw has been flooded. In addition, about 400 square kilometers around Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city, also appears to be flooded.
Many houses, sugarcane and banana fields were submerged in floodwaters. Myanmar mobilized military forces to provide relief to people in affected areas.
In some areas, floodwaters rose close to rooftops, forcing people to climb onto rooftops to avoid the floodwaters before being taken to safety by rescuers.
"This morning we walked through neck-high water. We are very hungry and thirsty. We have not eaten or drunk for three days," a woman in Sin Thay village told AFP.
Another local resident shared: "This is the first time I have witnessed such a flood. We had no time to prepare. It was a terrible experience."
According to local media, floods in the area around the capital Naypyitaw caused landslides and destroyed electricity towers, buildings, roads, bridges and houses.
