According to SMH on July 5, heavy rains caused flash floods and caused the Guadalupe River in Texas to rise up to 8 meters in less than an hour, sweeping away Camp Mystic, a summer camp for girls.
The US National Weather Service has declared a flash flood emergency in parts of Kerr County, about 65 miles northwest of San Antonio.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott described the flooding as "catastrophic", saying search and rescue operations were still underway.
At a press conference on the morning of July 5, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said 24 people were confirmed dead in the flash floods. In addition, 25 female students at Camp Mystic are still missing.
In a statement from Camp Mystic, campground staff said they experienced “catastrophic flooding” and the camp is currently without power, water or Wi-Fi.
About 700 children were reportedly at Camp Mystic when it was swept away by the overflowing Guadalupe River. 237 were rescued, including 167 who were airlifted to safety.
“The camp was completely destroyed. A helicopter landed and took everyone out. It was terrifying,” said Elinor Lester, 13.
Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick warned of continued flooding in west and central Texas. Officials said U.S. Coast Guard and federal personnel were assisting local authorities.
