Why Huawei surpassed Apple

Huawei leads in volume by capturing the mass market, while Apple maintains dominance in the high-profit segment of the smartwatch segment.

According to Counterpoint Research , global smartwatch sales in the April-June period this year increased 8% compared to the same period last year, reaching 34.4 million units. Of which, Huawei increased 53%, reaching about 7.2 million units, taking the lead for the first time with 21% market share.

On the other hand, Apple Watch sales fell 3% year-on-year, marking the seventh consecutive quarter of decline. The product line's global market share is now 17%, ranking second after the Chinese manufacturer.

Going into the analysis, the related reports all concluded: Huawei has overtaken Apple thanks to its pricing strategy. Specifically, the average selling price (ASP) of Huawei watches is about 227 USD , while Apple Watch is 413 USD , almost double.

However, the numbers also show that Huawei is not just relying on low prices to beat Apple. The Chinese brand has built a "pyramid" of products, from basic models like the mid-range line (GT, FIT) to flagship lines with many high-end functions and fashionable colors.

Distribution channels are also another important factor. In China, Huawei has expanded its offline stores to third and fourth-tier cities and even rural areas, allowing more users to experience the products directly. This strategy has helped the domestic market contribute more than 75% of sales.

Meanwhile, in the international market, Huawei is also gradually expanding abroad, with more than 62,000 stores in more than 170 countries and regions, including Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific .

While Huawei has risen thanks to its features and reasonable price, Apple still maintains its strength in the high-end segment when Apple Watch is famous for its smooth operation and rich application ecosystem (more than 50,000 applications).

This results in sales showing that Huawei is leading in terms of volume by capturing the mass market with a comprehensive product line, good battery life and multi-functionality.

In contrast, Apple firmly entrenches itself in the premium ecosystem circle, relying on apps and smooth experiences to secure loyal users.
