Mbeumo was left out of Ruben Amorim's squad. |
On the morning of July 27, Manchester United began their tour of the United States with a match against West Ham at MetLife Stadium. Mbeumo was present at MetLife Stadium but was not on Manchester United's playing list.
According to The Times , Mbeumo's late completion of his transfer from Brentford meant he was unable to make his Manchester United debut against West Ham. The 25-year-old signed for MU on July 22, just in time to join his teammates on their pre-season tour of the United States.
Brentford's pre-season training schedule started a week later than Man United's, and Mbeumo was also not in the best physical condition to play, having focused on the transfer market in recent weeks.
Despite successfully recruiting Mbeumo for £71 million, the "Red Devils" leadership was quite angry with Brentford because they thought the London team intentionally hindered the deal and tried to sell the player to other clubs in the Premier League.
Brentford even pressured Mbeumo to reduce his salary to increase the profit from the transfer fee. On the day of his debut, Mbeumo shared emotionally: “As soon as I knew I had the opportunity to play for Manchester United, I couldn’t refuse. This is the team I dreamed of since I was a child. I believe I have enough spirit and courage to reach new heights.”
