The Department of Hydrometeorology, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has just given explanations about the phenomenon of solar halos. In recent days, solar halos have continuously appeared in some provinces and cities such as Lang Son, Thai Nguyen, Ho Chi Minh City, Quang Ngai and this morning (May 15) Ha Nam .

According to the Meteorological Department, in the past few days, many people have taken pictures of the sky with a circle surrounding the sun.

This phenomenon is called "Sun halo" or in English "Sun halo".

Halo phenomenon

It usually appears on good weather days, the sky is covered by a thin layer of clouds called Cs clouds. This is a very thin, transparent layer of clouds, existing at an average altitude of 6-8km above the ground and is made up of ice crystals.

The meteorological department explains that the halo is formed as a phenomenon of light refraction when shining through this layer of ice crystals. It is different from a rainbow which is a phenomenon of light refraction through the atmosphere with many water particles.

“The radius of the circle corresponding to the sun's corona is 22 degrees from our perspective. So it is also called the '22-degree halo',” according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The Meteorological Department also emphasized that this is a phenomenon that is sometimes observed in Vietnam and is not an unusual sign in nature.

At around 10:30 this morning, many people who came to Tam Chuc Pagoda (Ha Nam) were surprised to see a halo around the sun before the Buddha relic procession on May 17. The image was immediately shared on social media.

Earlier, at around 11:45 a.m. on May 14, people in Quang Ngai province were also surprised to witness a solar halo appearing in the sky. At first, the solar halo was quite small, then it gradually grew larger, lasted for about an hour, then gradually faded and disappeared.

Not only in Quang Ngai, in recent days, people in provinces and cities such as Lang Son , Thai Nguyen, Ho Chi Minh City... have also encountered the phenomenon of solar halos.
