The base MacBook Air M3 features improved SSD speeds.

According to MacRumors , Max Tech's analysis video confirms that Apple has reverted to using two 128GB storage chips for the 13-inch MacBook Air M3 with 256GB of internal storage. The equivalent model from last year's M2 chip used only a single 256GB storage chip. This change resulted in faster SSD read and write speeds in tests because the two chips can handle requests in parallel.

The base version of the MacBook Air M3 has significantly improved SSD read speeds.

Max Tech ran Blackmagic's Disk Speed ​​Test tool with a 5GB file size test on both the M2 and M3 versions of the 13-inch MacBook Air with 8/256GB configurations. They found the SSD in the M3 model achieved up to 33% faster write speeds and 82% faster read speeds compared to the SSD in the M2 model. This improvement may extend to the base model of the 15-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip, although Max Tech has not yet explored that product.

Apple's decision to switch to a single 256GB SSD for the base MacBook Air M2 model in 2022 sparked controversy, although the slower SSD speeds were unlikely to be noticeable to the average user in everyday tasks. This change will now allow customers buying Apple's M3 line of laptops to avoid having to choose a model with a 512GB SSD for faster storage speeds.

This stems from the arrangement of the two 128GB chips.

Apple officially launched the MacBook Air M3 models on March 6th. The company continues to sell the 13-inch version using the M2 chip and an 8/256 GB configuration for $999; however, customers who want maximum SSD performance should avoid this model.
