In today's digital age, young people tend to communicate via text messages and social networks, and many young people lack confidence when communicating directly.

Below is a share from reader Phi Bao sent to Tuoi Tre Online about this issue.

The industry needs talkative students but they are shy.

I work at a public university and lecture at several other places, so I often come into contact with students of all ages, from full-time students to part-time students.

After many years of teaching English and Chinese language students, I discovered that: although students majoring in languages - a major that requires students to have good presentation skills, eloquence, flexible communication..., many students are very shy and afraid of direct communication.

Usually, during breaks between classes, I don't go to the faculty office but instead sit in the classroom to chat with the students.

I observed that from the time they entered the classroom until the end of class, many students just sat in one place, did not go out, did not talk to the teacher or classmates, just stayed quiet by themselves, and after finishing class, they looked at their phones.

I always have to be the one to take the initiative to ask the students questions first, and answer whatever they ask. If I don’t ask, most of the time they won’t say anything, just sit and watch YouTube and TikTok until the teacher tells them to go back to class.

Many times, there were even some students sitting in the same class as me who texted me on Zalo asking for permission to leave early on Saturday afternoon to go back to their hometown.

I read the new message and asked who asked the teacher for permission to leave early? The student said it was me. I said: Why didn't you ask the teacher directly but had to text? The student just kept quiet and said nothing.

In addition, there is also a phenomenon that when going to the board to talk about the content of a new lesson, some students just bow their heads to the ground and speak, not having enough courage to look straight into their classmates' faces to speak.

Moreover, there are students who tremble and forget all the content of the lesson they have memorized, and need the teacher to remind them to remember the content of the conversation.

Sitting in the same room without talking directly but texting

According to my research, the phenomenon of shyness in communication does not only occur with the students I am teaching.

Many young people working in offices also have this habit. Colleagues sit in the same room but do not talk directly but just text each other. The advantages of communicating by texting are many but the disadvantages are not few.

The advantage of this is that you can exchange and respond quickly without disturbing others, especially with sensitive, personal matters.

The downside of the habit of liking to communicate via social networks gradually leads to being very shy and having difficulty integrating with people.

In particular, increasingly limited vocabulary or the ability to handle situations not as quickly as before has been and is significantly affecting their work and life.

Not to mention, the consequences of young people being afraid to communicate can be listed as: they lack communication skills, do not feel confident when having to contact and expand relationships with others...

Improving communication skills requires a long time, perseverance and determination from the young person himself.

You can try to overcome this in many ways such as: talking less on social networks, reading books on communication skills, regularly joining clubs, attending communication and behavior skills classes...

Young people also need to read a lot of books, newspapers and news to enrich their vocabulary, information, knowledge and have a variety of topics when talking with others.

We need to understand that social media is also a tool and we should not be too dependent on it, let's go out and do new things to make our real life more colorful.

Good communicators have open, approachable relationships.

People who communicate well will have open relationships, a rich, interesting life and be more approachable in the eyes of others.

Lack of confidence and fear of communicating with people gradually makes life boring, relationships narrow and harder to share.

Be more open to accepting everything in a positive way and spread good things to everyone around you.

Don't hesitate to change to integrate, to improve yourself in a more positive direction.
