WinCommerce restructuring strategy for “sweet fruit”

In 2021, the Covid-19 pandemic created unprecedented challenges for all aspects of economic and social life. As the leading consumer and retail group in the country, Masan Group has focused all resources to ensure the supply chain and timely delivery of goods to people nationwide.

Making efforts to "overcome the wave" of the pandemic, in the first 9 months of 2021, Masan Group's net revenue reached VND 64,801 billion, up 16.5% compared to VND 55,618 billion in the same period last year. Most of Masan Group's business segments recorded strong revenue growth. Specifically, Masan Consumer Holdings increased by 14.3%; Masan MEATLife increased by 32.8% and Masan High-Tech Materials increased by 89.3%.

Q3/2021 is the first quarter that WinCommerce (formerly VinCommerce) has positive after-tax profit allocated to shareholders, after 7 quarters since being acquired by Masan. This is an important "sweet fruit" in WinCommerce's restructuring strategy, creating a foundation for Masan to take strategic steps in the Vietnamese consumer - retail market.

Mini-mall store model attracts customers

At the 2021 General Meeting of Shareholders, Mr. Danny Le - General Director of Masan Group said that, not stopping at the retail model providing pure necessities, Masan's vision is to build a "Point Of Life" platform to meet the needs of necessities, finance, healthcare, digital services, education, entertainment... These areas currently account for 80% of consumers' budgets. This will be a seamless platform from "offline" to "online" to help customers enjoy the same superior experience whether sitting at home or shopping at stores.

Accelerating the construction of the “Point Of Life” platform, Masan has continuously attracted foreign investment capital and expanded cooperation with leading Vietnamese enterprises. Recently, Masan and SK Group signed an agreement to acquire shares of The CrownX (a Consumer - Retail platform owning Masan Consumer Holdings and WinCommerce) for a total cash value of 345 million USD, of which SK Group invested 340 million USD. In addition to SK Group, in May 2021, a group of investors, including Alibaba and Baring Private Equity Asia, invested 400 million USD to acquire 5.5% of The CrownX shares.

On the Vietnamese side, in May 2021, Masan acquired 20% of Phuc Long Heritage Joint Stock Company, testing the Phuc Long kiosk model at VinMart+. In September 2021, Masan continued to acquire 70% of the shares of Mobicast Joint Stock Company - the owner of the Reddi mobile network, initially "encroaching" into the telecommunications sector. This group also cooperated with Techcombank and Phano Pharmacy to integrate financial services and pharmacy counters into VinMart+ stores (to be renamed WinMart+ in the near future).

Masan has piloted mini-mall stores in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Here, customers can buy necessities (VinMart+), make financial transactions (Techcombank), enjoy tea and coffee (Phuc Long), buy pharmaceuticals (Phano Mart) and use digital services (Reddi mobile network) all at one location. In addition, by the end of November, more than 300 Phuc Long kiosks had been integrated into VinMart+ in 13 provinces and cities.

According to Masan, mini-mall stores help consumers save time while still enjoying high-quality products and services. This is especially suitable for busy urban lives, where the middle class is growing rapidly. Mini-mall stores also allow Masan to expand its potential customer base. While WinMart+ customers are mainly housewives, Techcombank, Phuc Long, Phano, and Reddi mobile network are for all ages and genders. Especially young customers who are willing to experiment with new consumer trends.

VCSC has just issued positive recommendations on the prospects of Masan Group (HOSE - MSN) shares. Accordingly, the target price of MSN shares is determined at VND 186,000. This reflects the confidence of investors and financial institutions in the "Point Of Life" platform as well as the sustainable development strategy of this Group.
