Rebel groups now control more than 90 percent of Daraa province, after government forces repeatedly withdrew, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). Daraa was considered the "cradle of revolution" when the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011.
Recently, a rebel alliance led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) captured Aleppo and Hama - two other major cities. Rebels have also advanced to the city of Homs as the government withdraws from Deir Ezzor in the east.
In an interview with CNN , HTS leader Abu Mohammed al-Jolani affirmed that the goal is to overthrow the Assad regime. HTS originated from the Al-Qaeda branch in Syria and is considered a terrorist organization by the West.
The civil war in Syria has claimed the lives of more than 500,000 people and forced more than half of the population to flee their homes since it began in 2011.
* In light of the situation in Syria, the US State Department on December 6 called on its citizens to leave Syria "immediately while commercial means are still available", in the context of rebel Islamic forces continuing to attack President Bashar al-Assad's army.
In a security alert posted on social media, the US State Department stated: "The security situation continues to be volatile and unpredictable with clashes between armed groups taking place across the country. The Department urges US citizens to leave Syria immediately while commercial vehicles are still available."
* Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on December 6 that his country will continue to support Syria "by any means necessary" as President Bashar al-Assad's forces face a lightning attack by the rebel movement.
Speaking in Baghdad during his visit to Iraq, Mr. Abbas Araghchi emphasized: "The Islamic Republic of Iran has always supported Syria and will continue to do so with all its might, by all necessary means and at the request of the Syrian Government."
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also warned that the Syrian rebel offensive against President Bashar al-Assad posed a threat to the entire Middle East.
Speaking to reporters in Baghdad during a visit to Iraq, Abbas Araghchi stressed: “If Syria becomes a safe haven for terrorists with the return of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) and other terrorist groups, it will create a great threat to the region.”
