Vietnam Airlines diverts to emergency landing to rescue passengers - Photo: VNA
According to Vietnam Airlines, the incident occurred about 8 hours into the flight. A 61-year-old male passenger, Vietnamese nationality, suddenly had difficulty breathing and lack of oxygen. The flight attendants immediately made an announcement to seek medical assistance from fellow passengers.
Fortunately, a passenger who was a doctor was present to coordinate first aid and use an oxygen tank to support the victim.
However, judging that the passenger's health condition continued to worsen, the captain decided to divert the flight, landing at Erzurum airport at 10:32 a.m. on May 6 (Vietnam time).
Immediately after the plane landed, ground medical staff approached and took the patient to a local hospital for treatment, accompanied by relatives.
After completing the necessary procedures and receiving permission from the authorities, flight VN37 continued its journey to Frankfurt, taking off again at 3:00 p.m. the same day. The total delay was more than 6 hours compared to the plan.
A representative of Vietnam Airlines said that although changing the itinerary affects flight times and incurs additional fuel and ground costs, passenger safety and life are always given the highest priority.
The airline has repeatedly adjusted its itinerary to provide emergency care to passengers with medical problems.
Most recently, on January 11, flight VN1602 from Buon Ma Thuot to Hanoi made an emergency landing at Da Nang airport to take a passenger to the emergency room.
Or in December 2024, flight VN307 from Tokyo to Ho Chi Minh City also had to divert to Taoyuan Airport (Taiwan) due to a similar situation.
