Kylian Mbappe's controversial penalty helped PSG draw 1-1 with Newcastle in the fifth round of the Champions League group stage.
Newcastle were minutes away from victory at the Parc des Princes when referee Szymon Marciniak stopped play for a VAR check. He adjudged Tino Livramento to have handled the ball in the box. In fact, the ball hit the England defender's chest first, then his hand, as he tried to block Ousmane Dembele's cross.

On Athletic , former Scottish referee Ally McCoist commented that this was a heavy-handed decision for Newcastle, because the ball hit Livramento first, putting the defender in a passive position. On the penalty spot, Mbappe shot hard into the top right corner, making it impossible for goalkeeper Nick Pope to touch the ball despite guessing the right direction.
