What is the secret that helps Cambodian durian 'change its life' in China?
Cambodia currently has about 5,289 hectares of durian cultivation, with an estimated output of 36,600 to 37,000 tonnes per year. According to the Ministry of Agriculture , Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), nine provinces in Cambodia are considered to have high potential for durian cultivation, including Kampot, Kampong Cham, Tbong Khmum, Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, Battambang, Pursat, Koh Kong and Kampong Thom. Among these, Tbong Khmum province plays a leading role with most of the area planned for harvesting and export.
Cambodia’s official direct export of durian to China marks a milestone, making it the ninth ASEAN country to do so. This is a big step forward after other agricultural products such as rice, bananas, mangoes, longans and pepper, affirming the growing role of durian in the national agricultural and economic development strategy.
Mr. Heng Pisith, Director of the Tbong Khmum Provincial Department of Agriculture, emphasized that this export initiative is a strong driving force, helping farmers shift from supplying only to the domestic market or exporting to Thailand to the Chinese market, which offers stable purchasing prices and ensures quality through professional packaging standards.
