Mbappe breaks 71-year-old record at Real Madrid

(Dan Tri) - Kylian Mbappe has set another record for Real Madrid, while continuing to hold on to the fragile hope of winning La Liga for the Bernabeu team.

Kylian Mbappe shined with a goal in Real Madrid's 2-1 victory over Mallorca in round 36 of La Liga which took place in the early morning of May 15 (Vietnam time).

This means the French striker has surpassed the achievement of legendary Alfredo Di Stefano 71 years ago, when he became the player who scored the most goals in La Liga in his first season with Real Madrid (28 goals).

The Argentine legend had previously scored 27 league goals in the 1953-54 season after moving to Real Madrid from Millionarios. Di Stefano scored 308 goals in 396 appearances for Los Blancos during his 11-year spell with the club.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Raul Gonzales have scored more goals for Real Madrid than Di Stefano.

Mbappe's latest goal was his 28th in La Liga and his 40th in all competitions in 53 appearances since his move from Paris Saint Germain.

He also broke Ivan Zamorano's 32-year-old record for most goals for the club in a debut season, surpassing Ronaldo's record for Real Madrid when the Portuguese striker scored only 33 goals after moving from Man Utd in the 2009-10 season.

Real Madrid's victory over Mallorca means Barcelona still cannot win the championship early, as the gap between the two teams has narrowed to 4 points and there are still 2 rounds ahead.

However, tonight Barcelona will play in round 36 and if they win at Espanyol, the Nou Camp team will be crowned champions.
