After the end of the 2022 World Cup, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris retired from the French national team. According to L'Equipe , coach Didier Deschamps decided to give the captain's armband to Mbappe for the international matches in March.
Coach Deschamps considered two options: Mbappe and Griezmann. After talking with the French team members, he decided to give this responsibility to the 24-year-old striker of PSG.
In the past, Mbappe has never held the captain's armband for the French team, while Griezmann held this role in September 2022.
Recently, when asked who will take over the captaincy of the French team, Hugo Lloris shared: "There is a player who is increasingly asserting his importance in the team.
He not only has quality on the pitch but also has a voice in the dressing room. That person is Mbappe."
Mbappe has been hugely influential for France over the past five years. He has been a key player in Les Bleus' two World Cup final appearances. They won the 2018 World Cup and finished runners-up in the 2022 World Cup.
Despite being only 24 years old, Mbappe has made 66 appearances for the French national team and scored 36 goals. The striker also has two individual titles at the World Cup.
In 2018, he was selected as the Best Young Player. In the tournament 4 years later, the striker born in 1998 received the Golden Boot award with 8 goals.
In addition to choosing the captaincy, coach Deschamps decided to let AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan become the number one goalkeeper to replace Hugo Lloris. However, this choice is only temporary.
The AC Milan goalkeeper will have to compete with Alphonse Areola and Brice Samba. Coach Deschamps will make the final decision based on the goalkeepers' performances in the two international matches in March and June.
According to the schedule, the French team will have 2 matches with the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland in the Euro 2024 qualifiers taking place on March 25 and 28.
