On the afternoon of June 13, the seminar program "New chapter of the Semiconductor industry - Opportunities for Vietnam" was jointly organized by VINASA and the Semiconductor Industry Development Committee with the aim of discussing and updating the latest trends and reports on the semiconductor industry, and at the same time shaping the development opportunities of this strategic industry in Vietnam.

The future depends on semiconductors

According to Mr. Truong Gia Binh, more than 25 years ago, FPT - the pioneer enterprise of Go Global, opened its doors to the world in the 1990s but was alone because it did not spread the spirit of software export, causing the Vietnamese business community to lag behind in the wave of technology globalization.

FPT also did not invest in semiconductors when the opportunity came early, although the Group's leaders had visited Taiwan (China) and seen the potential of this industry. To date, Mr. Truong Gia Binh has affirmed: "FPT will not repeat those mistakes again."

Sharing at the workshop, Mr. Truong Gia Binh said that FPT identified 5 strategic technology pillars including: AI - SALES - CARS - DIGITAL - GREEN, in which AI and SALES (semiconductors) will be the pillars of the digital future.

“Semiconductors are the food of the digital age. The world will need microchips like people need food,” he said. Along with that, AI is considered the oil and gas of the new era. AI models, especially AI Edge chip technology, require high-performance, energy-saving, high-precision chips, and this is the segment in which Vietnam can strongly participate.

“We are good at making things that are small, compact, and absolutely precise, things that AI on chip really needs,” Mr. Binh affirmed. “When we talked about AI chips, some people were skeptical. But then DeepSeek was born, showing that we are on the right track.”

According to Mr. Truong Gia Binh, although Vietnam missed the opportunity with the semiconductor industry more than 25 years ago, now is the time for Vietnam to not be slow again.

“We did not invest in semiconductors even though we went to Taiwan and saw the potential. FPT will not repeat those mistakes again.”

Historical opportunity of the Vietnamese people

Vietnam is facing a great opportunity to participate deeply in the global semiconductor industry, with two core advantages as the foundation.

Attracting semiconductor talent, salary alone is not enough Attracting semiconductor talent, salary alone is not enough

First of all, our country possesses a young, intelligent, quick-witted workforce, ready to learn and master high technology. Not only capable, this generation also has the desire to change their lives, the desire to bring the country to a strong development through knowledge and creativity.

In addition, the infrastructure for chip research and design in Vietnam is gradually taking shape. Modern labs are continuously being invested in, creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese experts from all over the world to return to contribute and directly participate in the process of building a high-tech ecosystem right in their homeland.

In particular, an indispensable factor is consistent policy orientation from the Government . Decision 1131/QD-TTg dated June 12, 2025 clearly establishes semiconductors and artificial intelligence as two key national technologies, a strong affirmation of the commitment to long-term development in this field.

“I believe that 1-2 nano technology will continue to develop in the US and Japan. But widely applied technologies such as AI Edge chips, which are flexible and compact, must be produced in Vietnam. The rise and fall of a nation is the responsibility of every man. Whether Vietnam will become a powerful nation in the future and whether our people can prosper depends on ourselves,” Mr. Nguyen Anh Binh emphasized.

Not just a vision, that opportunity is gradually becoming clearer through concrete actions. At the event, Mr. Tran Xuan Tu, Director of the Institute of Information Technology, Hanoi National University, said: “Recently, we had direct negotiations with the leaders of TSMC, the world's leading semiconductor manufacturer. They recognized that Vietnam has a very clear opportunity to form a chip design ecosystem, from training, research to application.”

Not stopping there, the Institute is also negotiating educational cooperation with Amkor, one of the largest corporations in the field of semiconductor packaging and testing.

According to Mr. Tu, this cooperation will lay an important foundation for improving human resource capacity in Vietnam, especially in the advanced packaging sector, a key link in the semiconductor industry value chain.

“I believe that if universities, businesses, governments and communities work together, Vietnam can absolutely become a regional center for design and innovation in the semiconductor industry,” Mr. Tu affirmed.
