As one of the largest national parks and also the largest almost continuous limestone mountain area in Vietnam, Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park was twice recognized by UNESCO as a world natural heritage in 2003 and 2015 based on two criteria: geology - geomorphology and ecosystem - biodiversity.
Many values, many mysteries
According to Mr. Pham Hong Thai, Director of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Management Board, this place contains many outstanding global values in terms of geology, geomorphology and biodiversity.
This is the largest Karst region in the world, with a history of formation over 400 million years ago with all the main stages of development of the Earth's crust; of which 447 caves have been surveyed and measured. In particular, Son Doong Cave and En Cave are the largest and third largest caves in the world.
Not only biodiversity, even the Karst cave system still has many mysteries. Many caves and underground rivers deep inside the cave have not been set foot by humans.
"However, this is only the survey result of about 30% of the area of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park. We will gradually discover the hidden values of this place," said Mr. Thai.
