Through the introduction of Mr. Le Duy Trung - Chairman of Ia Pnôn Commune Farmers' Association, we recently had the opportunity to visit the organic durian farming model of Mr. Hoang Van Tuan. This durian garden was planted by Mr. Tuan from 2017 to 2024 and currently 10/20 hectares have been harvested. Thanks to organic farming, his durian products are being purchased by traders at a stable price of 30-70 thousand VND/kg.

According to Mr. Tuan, durian is a crop that is quite sensitive to the weather, so it is necessary to pay close attention to cultivation techniques, from choosing the origin and quality of seedlings to applying technical care processes. Accordingly, for the garden to develop sustainably, he chooses to buy seedlings from reputable nurseries in the southwestern provinces, mainly Thai Monthong and Ri6 durian varieties. At the same time, he carefully treats the soil before planting as well as invests in a sprinkler irrigation system to save water and ensure humidity for the garden in the dry season.

Mr. Tuan also applies a safe organic care process to ensure the growth of the garden. In particular, he uses organic fertilizers and biological pesticides to care for and prevent pests. In addition, he does not use herbicides but only cuts the grass to keep the plants moist; he takes advantage of the amount of cut grass to press green to create organic fertilizer to increase humus, improve soil nutrition and reduce fertilizer costs.

“In 2021, my entire durian acreage was granted VietGAP certification. However, to increase the value of the product, I am switching to organic farming and in fact, this process has shown many benefits.

Although the use of organic fertilizers and biological products for care is costly and labor-intensive, it helps eliminate many types of pathogenic fungi and creates beneficial bacteria to protect the plants better. In addition, this cultivation process also helps the plants grow healthily, thereby being less affected by the weather, minimizing the situation of fruit drop when encountering unusual weather conditions," said Mr. Tuan.

In addition to helping the tree grow sustainably, applying the organic durian cultivation process also creates products that are safe for consumers' health, helping to increase value and create favorable output. In 2022, his family's "Hoang Tuan durian" product was granted a 3-star OCOP certification. This year, the garden is expected to yield 130-150 tons of fruit, with a contracted selling price of 30-70 thousand VND/kg, the family is expected to make a profit of nearly 3 billion VND. Currently, his family is creating regular jobs for 3 local workers with a salary of 9 million VND/month.

“In the future, when the entire durian area is harvested simultaneously, the output will increase significantly. Therefore, my family will continue to promote organic durian cultivation and complete procedures to grant growing area codes for the entire area to facilitate product output. However, my family and many households in the area hope that the local government will support cooperation with import-export companies to consume products, helping people feel secure in cultivating,” Mr. Tuan expressed.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Tu - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Duc Co district - informed: The whole district has about 1,000 hectares of durian, of which, 470 hectares have been certified to VietGAP standards, more than 300 hectares have been granted growing area codes (5 codes) and 24 hectares have been certified with 3-star OCOP (2 households). In addition, the district has also built the "Duc Co durian" brand. In which, Mr. Hoang Van Tuan is 1 of 2 households with durian products certified with OCOP.

In particular, Mr. Tuan's entire durian acreage has also been certified by VietGAP. With this cultivation process, Mr. Tuan not only creates sustainable development for the garden, increases the value of the product but also provides safe products for consumers' health, contributing to environmental protection.
